Question by tonireese0314: What possible medical reasons can cause unexplained weight gain?
I had Gastric Bypass 3.5 yrs ago. In the last 6 mo. I have been steadily gaining weight. I eat right. I don’t eat anything that I shouldn’t. I have even cut out things that I thought MIGHT cause problems, i.e potatoes and rice. I don’t eat any wheat based products (I have an allergy to wheat) I stick to meat veggies, fruit, and some dairy. If I allow myself a treat, it is a sugarfree popsicle, or fudgesicle. I am very fustrated. I have gained about 40lbs and it is scaring the heck out of me. I would have to say the only bad thing that I do, is probably not get enough exercise. But even at that I am probably only eating between 1200-1500 tops in calories, but I have put on 4lbs in 2days. I am going to go insane if I can’t find the answers. A friend suggested that maybe I am eating to much fruit. As far as the lack of exercise, I can understand maybe not losing, but the gain is what is so puzzling. This is why I am looking at maybe a medical reason. I did have my thyroid checked, its okay

My godmother had a cyst in her tummy for years without even knowing. She thought she was just gaining weight, but it was actually the cyst growing. This or a tumor could cause it, you should really see a doctor.

Question by stvnbrunner: How do i put weight on my dog with severe food allergies?
I have a 4 yr old mastiff mix that is alergic to EVERYTHING! I have found Wellness kibble and that helps but he is very, very skinny. He weighs about 75lbs and should weigh about 90-100 lbs. I have tried increasing his meal amount and frequency and adding cooked rice to his diet, but this tends to lead to stomach upset and then he wants to eat grass, which he is allgergic to. He also takes Benedryl and Prednizone for the more severe itching and skin problems associated with the itching. HELP!!!! Have gone to the vet and has had allergy testing done. The only grain he’s not allergic to is rice and fish is the only protein he is allergic to. Is there a hypo-allergenic weight gain product out there or a homemade high calorie something i can feed him? Everything i have found has corn or soy or wheat that he can’t eat.

ask your vet, there are rx diets, that can be high in fats and good for putting on weight. The clinic I work at carries Royal Canin like potato and venison, potato and rabbit, potato and whitefish, duck and green pea. Foods that dogs have never had before that way they generally don’t react to them…but yet it helps with weight.

Question by Jessica: How can I help my thin toddler with food allergies gain weight?
I have a 19 month old son who is allergic to peanuts, eggs, any kind of dairy, and soy. He is thin, but not dangerously thin. How do I fatten him up if he is allergic to some of the most fattening things for toddlers (peanut butter, cheese, butter, etc.)? He drinks rice milk and hemp milk and loves them. Do you have any smoothie or food recipes that might help my little guy? Thanks in advance.

He’s fine the way he is. Just offer him healthy foods and he’ll be fine. Some children are slight.

Question by Kristy K: 11 mo old with Failure to Thrive-has Milk Protein Allergy, what can he drink to gain weight?
My son has been breastfed for 11 months and is only 16 lbs. He has been diagnosed with Failure To Thrive since the age of 6 mo. but he hates formula and refuses to drink it unless it is mixed with 75% breast milk. I want to change him over to other liquids that will make him gain weight, but he will boycott them because of the taste.

Although he loved Pediasure, it has milk protein (Casein) and gave him a horrible allergic reaction. Are there any high-calorie nutritious things I can give him to drink?

Please help. Thanks!
We have tried Nutramigen specifically for allergies and 2 different soy formulas.

Regular Soy milk does not have enough calories/nutrients to make him grow.

Dr’s just want him to drink more formula or high cal. drink but I can’t get him to do it.
PS. Lactose (sugar)free does not mean Casein (protein) Free, Lactose intolerance is different than a milk allergy. I feel like this is hopeless.. praying for a miracle.

i would just consult your pediatrician about something like that, they would know what is best. esp. if he has allergic reactions to things, i wouldn’t trust what someone on yahoo answers has to say, they may endanger your child.

Question by momof2: Why do I keep losing weight?
Okay- back history first:
I developed general anxiety in 2005. Fear of going crazy, hypochondriasis. Got that under control. In fact rarely even need an ativan. Then some life changes happened- I went to nursing school after being a stay at home mom for 5 years- graduated in December 2009. Husband lost job in July of 2009. So I got a full time job in August of 2009. November of 2009 after quitting my zyrtec medicine for seasonal allergies- I started obsessing about “what if’s” again. What if now that I am not on zyrtec I have food allergies? What if I have an anaphylactic reaction to food. So starting on thanksgiving day 2009 fear eating food due to possible anaphylactic reaction. All food. EVERYTHING. I started out slowly just eating bread. Then added ramen noodle soup and oatmeal. Anyway I had lost about 15 pounds by the end of May. I gave up all sweets, all sugar, all snacks. Now my diet has increased some. I have now lost 20+ pounds. I eat oatmeal for breakfast every morning or pancakes. For lunch I eat either beef and cheese quesadilla’s, ham and cheese sandwich, or loaded baked potato. For dinner I can eat chicken or beef items. I just ate spaghetti red and garlic toast. So I have had major life changes in the last year- new full time job and weird food phobia. I understand the weight loss. Now I know that I gave up sweets and all sugar and all milk, eggs, shellfish, peanut butter… BUT I am still eating! I am eating 3 full meals a day. I have not weighed myself but people keep telling me I look like I am getting smaller. I was wearing a size 10/12 in August of 2009 and now it is July of 2010 and I am a size 4/6. So with my anxiety here I sit wondering if I have some underlying medical condition that keeps me losing weight. I do not work out. There is no reason I should be losing more weight. Surely just cutting out snack foods, sugar, sweets can’t make you lose 20 pounds- or can it? I do have a goiter BUT my thyroid levels were normal last year. UGH!!! Any words of wisdom? Should I consult a doctor or is the weight loss related to my weird food phobia? I am seeing a psychologist about the food thing by the way.
