Question by terra: are peanut allergies always life threatening?
My 13 month old son had an appt with an allergist today, and turns out he is allergic to peanuts! The dr. said the reaction from the skin test was mild, but that doesnt mean anything. He even prescribed me an epi-pen just in case! What i want to know, is if its possible to have a mild peanut allergy, or if its always a life threatining situation? And what are the chances he’ll grow out of it?

Question by Kegaleg: Can severe food allergies be treated so they are not life threatening for an entire lifetime?
My daughter and son both have life-threatening allergies to tree nuts. It is a constant worry for me and my wife and it makes eating out in restaurants almost impossible. I wanted to know if there are any methods out there to reduce or remove these allergic reactions by the body.

My son also has an allergy to tree nuts. His allergist told him that he’ll always have it and it won’t get better over time. Having said that, it’s really best to discuss this with your children’s doctor or allergist to be absolutely sure. If there’s something that can be done, they’ll know about it.

Question by blue_eyed_girl: My child has a life threatening peanut allergy- do I need an IEP or a 504 Plan for her when she starts school?
Can someone please explain which is preferred for a food allergy? She does not have any other “disabilities” other than the peanut allergy. I’m meeting with the principal soon and would like to know what I’m talking about and which will best ensure her safety at school.

There is a lot of info online, but I’d prefer if someone could explain it in layman’s terms. Thank you very much.

Talk to a doctor. You should not rely on strangers online to tell you what to do when it comes to your child’s health.

We are travelling to Croatia and need a very accurate translation card to hand to waiters/chefs/shops to let them know that our daughter has a life-threatening allergy to nuts, particularly peanuts. We need to emphasise that it needs to be taken seriously. We also need to know how to ask for medical attention and an ambulance. Advice on any national dishes to avoid would also be very gratefuly received…Thank you!
