Question by no*more*chocolate: Milk Allergy: Are these typical symptoms???? OK, first of all I know I was stupid so please don’t tell me.
I’m 31 years old and have just been diagnosed as having a milk allergy. The allergist figures I have been allergic since childhood but other doctors have put the symptoms to other things… When I realized there was a problem it was because I broke out into hives, in addition to the normal gastric and migranes I normally felt.

But two days ago, I ate a tiny sliver of pizza with cheese on it and that cheese sent me into a tale spin. First hives, then immediate violent vomiting (so bad that I also vomited blood, pulled muscles in my right rib cage and did something to my throat!) On top of this while not really labored breathing was difficult and my chest felt really tight.

So that one little sliver of pizza sent me to the ER. Does anyone know if this is normal and WHY after 31 years of being a milk product junky that it would get this bad so quickly? I mean now even my shampoo, that has a milk rinse added, causes my head to break out. AHHHHH
The question is:

Does anyone know if this is normal and WHY after 31 years of being a milk product junky that it would get this bad so quickly?
I hadn’t been taken off milk before, my family doctor had always put it to other things, the gastric symptoms were IBS and the migranes were well, migranes. It was only when I went specially to an allergist that they diagnosed (through RAST) the milk allergy. I have only been “off” it for about 2 weeks and I haven’t been doing very well but after this episode I am now convinced I CAN”T have any. But still wondering if vomitting blood is normal.

Question by Brian: How can you tell if milk is bad without a sense of smell and allergic to it?
My son is 4. I give him milk and chocolate milk, but I have no sense of smell and I have extreme lactose allergy. How can I tell if it is bad so I don’t give it to my son. I have been dumping it down the sink 3 days before it expired to be safe, but that is expensive. I am a single father.
I do only buy half gallons at a time, he just doesnt drink alot of it quickly.

Best answer:

Answer by Ian
Chances are if it tastes bad he won’t drink it. Without tasting it, smelling it or culturing what is in the milk the only thing you can do is visually inspect it and have the child taste it.

I have had milk stay good in the fridge for up to a week after the expiration. It really just depends on how long it stays in/out of the fridge.

Have you tried purchasing half gallons of milk?

Question by Lena: Help! How can I tell if my husband is allergic to wheat, gluten or something else?
I’m at a loss on what my husbands allergic to. At first I was thinking it was wheat, or yeast or gluten but now i’m lost again. He can eat tortilla shells and grapenut cereal, but can’t eat 100% whole wheat bread. He seemed fine with white bread last time he ate it, but yet he’s allergic to baked ritz crackers.
I’m so confused and I’ve looked many things up and checked labels trying to find the one ingredient that he’s allergic to just to find it on the list of ingredients in something he can eat which brings me back to square one….again.

We have gone to an allergist but he was of no help with my husbands food allergies. He refused to do a food allergy test. And yes we’ve done the writing down what he eats for a week and checking ingredients. I’m lost, i’m frustrated and I’m rather angry because i’m not getting anwhere on figuring any of this out. I’ve checked out many web sites but still haven’t been able to find much. Please help. Serious answers only. Thank you.
His tounge swells up and his throat and mouth starts itching. It’s not uncommon for his toungue to swell up for no reason (probably due to outside allergies) so when he eats stuff we tend to go by weather his mouth starts itching or not. Once we know he has a reaction to a certain food we exclude it from his diet. His list of acceptable food to eat is slim. He also can’t eat a lot of dairy because of sinus problems, and diabeties run in his family and he tends to show symptoms of that so we also try and keep sugar and other unhealthy foods out of his diet.
He’s also allergic to carrots, beets, fruit jucies, the list goes on…and all with the same symptoms.
His symptoms from degergents and perfumes are more the itchy water eyes, sneezing, hives and big red blotches.

Best answer:

Answer by Do I know you? ya right LoL
maybe he has celiac disease….

most ppl are allergic to wheat gluten and don’t even know it…they can eat some products with it and and be fine…I would take him to another allergist Dr and have him run a test and find out…did he have problems as a child? or is this rarely new? are u sure its food? it could be soap, new perfums colognes different laundry soap? lotion?

Question by Japandra: How can I tell if I have celiacs, or just a wheat allergy?
Is there any real way to tell if I have celiacs disease, or just a wheat allergy?
I had a blood test that came up negative for celiacs, but I know that’s not reliable (especially since I had been totally gluten free when I had the test done, and I heard you need to eat a lot of gluten before it, or it’ll register nothing anyway…).

I also heard there’s another *horrible* test that can be taken which is pretty much infallible, but I don’t think I want to go through it.

I know that I feel a lot better when I am wheat/gluten free, and I have been for about a year now.
But I don’t actually know if gluten is the problem, or just wheat (if I could eat barley, that would make things so much easier!).

I know some people might just say “experiment and see what happens” but I really don’t want to risk that. I lived with *horrible* mental problems (moreso than the stomach problems – they were there, but not as bad) and I really don’t want to risk those coming back. The anxiety/depression was really bad, and I feel like I was practically schitzo, and I really don’t want to risk that coming back even for a day.

At any rate, I just find it really difficult and expensive to follow a full gluten-free diet, and I’d like to be able to tell if it might just be wheat that’s the problem, and not gluten specifically.
Know what I mean? ^_^;

Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Nurse Alex
Bottom line, you have to be eating wheat for the blood test to show anything or get a colonoscopy to check for damage. They’re not actually that bad.
From what I can tell (I’m celiac myself), it sounds more like celiac due to the severity of your symptoms. My brother is has aspergers and has the same emotional issues when he eats wheat (he is celiac too).
Celiac disease is an auto-immune disease that is triggered by gluten (the protein gliadin). It is contained in wheat, barley, and some oats due to contamination in the processing facilities. Gluten and wheat are pretty much the same thing: all wheat contains gluten.
It only has to be expensive to follow a gluten free diet if you buy the gluten free bread products. I don’t bother, and just steer clear of it entirely. I don’t use bread, and I only have small amounts of rice pasta occasionally. It will be an adjustment to learn to eat new things, but you will get used to it. From my experience, if I continue to eat wheat, my reaction gets worse each time. You are also doing more damage to your intestinal tract, and getting your immune system riled up by triggering the auto-immune response again and again can lead to other food allergies.
If you have any more questions, post them here or message me.

I have a deadly peanut allergy. I recently had a full-blown reaction because someone near me was eating peanut butter. I’m currently looking for a new job. Does anyone have any experince telling employers that they need to be in an allergen-free environment? Should I mention it in the interview?

Thanks!

Answer by Babyboy
I have never experience this but I have a nephew who has a peanut allergy. I believe you should tell your employer of this situation. If he cares he will help insure the safety of all his employees. Good luck telling him and finding a new job but just remember you will have to tell that employer as well.

I’m very allergic.
i think it might also be because i’ve never had a reaction (i’m very careful), so they don’t think it will happen.
