Question by Missie Tugae: Could I have suddenly developed an allergy to milk?
I’ve never had any allergies, but this past year it seems as if I’ve developed an allergy to any sort of dairy there is. It started off with my stomach hurting a little whenever I had cereal, then it just got worse. I get so dizzy, have debilitating pain through my body, and I feel as if I can’t breathe. At first I thought I was just lactose intolerant, but I’ve tried those pills and they don’t do anything.
Tonight I had baked ziti for dinner and even that made me really sick and it never did before. I understand there’s a difference between lactose intolerance and milk allergy. No one seems to believe me that milk suddenly makes me very very sick.
What do you think?
Oh and I’m seventeen years old.

The thing about allergies is that you can develop them anytime in your life. You do not need an excuse. Our bodies change all the time, our tiny cells, hence hormones evolve and mutate. Even these are miniscule changes, they can influence other cells so their “job” change as well.
So, yes it is very possible that you are allergic to diary. I just stopped eating diary a few months ago because i too have other allergies, and diary makes them worse.
Do not panic just yet. There are plenty of alternatives out there. They taste slightly different, but can get used to them very quickly if you consume them on a daily basis.
Milk – rice milk, almond milk, soymilk (fortified with all the good vitamins and minerals milk has)
Cheese – tofu/soy cheeses (taste just like the real one)
In the long run, it is better for you to eat the vegan diary anyway, because animal diary tends to produce lots of mucous in the body, which is difficult to get rid of, and messes with digestion.
