Question by Lindsay: Is it the stomach flu or a milk allergy in my 2 month old?
My son just turned 2 months old. Last weekend we all had a stomach bug and we thought that maybe he had escaped it until he started throwing up. He only threw up 3 bottles in about 3 days. He had no diarrhea at this point and was completely himself and eating normally other than throwing up a bottle a day. After that stopped he then had the diarrhea but it also his stools had some mucous in them as well as little tinges of blood. He went to the pediatrician today and she doesn’t think it’s the flu, but instead a milk allergy. She did say though that there is a possibility that his bowels are just irritated from the diarrhea and that’s why there is a little blood but most times its due to milk allergy. She gave me nutramigen, a non milk based formula, to start giving him(he was on similac advance). The first bottle of this new formula he threw up, so I don’t really know what to think. I will be seeing her again on Friday, but am curious if anyone else has insight on this. Thank you!

it does take a few days for formula to regulate in the body. I would give some pedialyte to help with hydrating your baby and wait a few more days to see if baby can stomach the new formula.

Question by porcupineporno: Is it a milk allergy, intolerance or a stomach virus?
I have a 4 week old she started out on similac advanced at the hospital. then i started pumping and she was getting both. she would occasionally spit up but nothing to extreme, she usually kept most of her food down. then i began to dry up and decided to go with all formula for her. since i am on WIC that meant using Good Start. For the first three days she was fine, eating just like always. then on the 4th night, i tried giving her a bottle before i went to bed and she threw up the first ounce she ate. i assumed she wasnt quite ready to eat so i laid down. i woke up to her fussing 3 hours later(which by then it had been 7 hours since her last full bottle) i immediately tried to feed her and she threw it all right back up. that went on all night long. All she wanted to do was sleep. SHe wasnt crying for a bottle, she would drink it if it was in her mouth but really couldnt care less about it. If i took it away she didnt care at all. I called the doctor first thing in the AM and was told to take her to the ER. They checked her out and did some xrays and ultrasounds and blood check and said she probably had either a stomach virus or a milk allergy. they gave us pedialyte to give to her 5ml at a time every 5 minutes, once they saw she was keeping that down they sent us home saying it was a stomach virus. but told me that if the vomiting kept up that I should consider switching to soy formula. I gave her an ounce of formula and she kept that down. next feeding she ate another ounce and threw that up, then 2 ounces at the next feeding kept that down, then 3 ounces in the morning and threw that all up. now my question is, if it was a milk allergy wouldnt that have shown sooner? what do you think? can anyone relate? i really rather not switch to soy….help please!

an allergy can show up at anytime, and can show up after repeated exposure.
one of my kids developed a milk allergy in first grade. if all it takes is switching formula to make your baby comfortable and healthy (bc how can she have nutrients if she throws up everything???)
then why not try it?
go to a dr – they may write you an rx for special formula if they consider it medically necessary.

Question by dum dum wants gum gum: How can I help my daughters horrible stomach ache?
My 12 year old is home in bed, and she is very sick. Yesterday she woke up with a terrible stomach ache and was vomiting about every 30 minutes. Today she is better, but not great. She says she has cramps. I am pretty sure it is an allergy, because she is intolerant to wheat and had too much of it on Saturday. Her younger sister had a ”abdominal migraine” about 3 weeks ago, and it was back to her last Thursday. Could she have caught her sisters virus? What can I do to make her feel better?

get a small towel and wet it completely and put it in the microwave and as soon as you take it out put it on her stomach. It will make her feel better trust me.

Question by Kiki: I have a hiatal hernia, polyps in the stomach, and irritation in the lining of my intestines – why?
I had biopsies taken of the polyps and intestines, so by Monday my doctors should give me a call back and tell me why… but I’m just wondering if anyone had any ideas in the meantime… any common things that cause these. I was told that one was a wheat allergy, but I was already tested for that, and it was negative.

Any other ideas?

You seem to be the victim of “genetic bad luck.” Your hiatal hernia is not likely to be connected to your other two medical problems.
