Question by Cake: Can I have some help on working out?
I’m 13 years old and I need to start working out. (or do SOMETHING) I’m almost 14, 5’10, 135 pounds. I have muscle, but I’m so skinny you can’t see it unless I flex. I have Celiac disease – allergy to wheat, rye, barley, oats, and it DOES impact this.
Does anyone have some tips on working out? I realize that I’m still growing and all, but I’m just so wimpy looking that I need to do something. Thanks!

As far as food, I know a pretty buff kid with the same disease who mostly ate meat and eggs. You can still get plenty of protein from these things which builds muscle. Are you able to eat legumes like beans or nuts? Those are also a good substitute.
As for exercise, i say work on muscle training over cardio if you’re looking to get buff. You say you’re thin already so you don’t need to lose weight. Naturally, muscle is heavier than fat so I wouldn’t worry about you’re low weight as of yet. Just build more, which will come with a well balanced work out and proper dieting (which I’m sure you already understand). If you want to do a more active work out, which more fun for young people than sitting in gyms, I suggest taking up a sport like karate or kick boxing. Even though it’s more along the cardio liknes, the muscle will come with training and you will build character and good habits as well.
Also, genetics may have something to do with your thin muscle build. I know another guy, asian and 21, who is skinny as a bean until he flexes. It’s pretty funny when people underestimate his strength based on his size (he’s probably about 5’5″).
Finally, ask your pediatrician for any advice about working out/dieting do’s and don’ts with your condition to prevent hurting your body. Like you said, you’re still growing so you want to take care of yourself as best as possible.
Hope this helps some and good luck. =3 It’s always good to start a healthy lifestyle when you’re young.
