Question by jiygfk: Does being allergic to shrimp mean that I might be allergic to other things?
I am pretty sure that I am allergic to shrimp. I have always avoided eating shrimp because I was convinced that it would taste gross, but one day I ate some of my mom’s fried rice (not knowing that it was shrimp fried rice) and my mouth and throat started feeling tingly and like it was closing up, and I got really sick to my stomach, and ended up puking up the fried rice. Keep in mind, I only had a few of the little pieces of shrimp that were in the fried rice, so had I eaten more, who knows how bad the reaction would have been. Anyways, does being allergic to shrimp mean being allergic to shellfish, or other similar foods? I know I can eat fish sticks, tilapia, salmon, and catfish without a bad reaction, but I’ve never had any other type of seafood. I have also eaten clam chowder and nothing bad happened. I’m just kind of nervous about going near seafood. What do you think? Also, do I need to carry one of those epipens? I think a doctor has to prescribe you one, but I havent gone to the doctor about allergies, should I?

An allergy test by a doctor costs 0 apiece for 2 tests. Or you can do your own detective work. Try to add a new food and see if you have the reaction. You can read more at www.webmd.com and www.medlineplus.com..

Question by I’m a Mommy ?: If my husband is allergic to shrimp, should I eat them?
I’m 15 weeks pregnant and the doctors office isn’t open today to ask them so I though I’d just ask you all what you’ve heard.
My husband and his father are both allergic to shrimp. I was reading an article on what you should and shouldn’t eat (myth vs. fact) when pregnant. Two myths were shellfish and peanuts/peanut butter but then it went on to say that they were OK to eat “unless your family has a history of allergies to these foods”. Of course, I just happened to read this after a lovely fried shrimp lunch! I’ve also had shrimp several times over the last few months because it is on the “safe fish” list. I informed my doctor at my initial appointment that he was allergic to shrimp but nothing was said to me about not eating it. I was just told not to put another piece of tuna in my mouth until after the baby was born.
So, have you heard anything about avoiding foods if there is a family allergy to them?
I’m thinking of a hereditary allergy that the baby may inherit from his dad’s side of the family.

As long as it is cooked then I dont see the problem. You mainly arent suppose to eat like shark and stuff bc of the mercury in it. I eat tuna fish I put it on sandwiches and all, I have never heard that you cant eat tuna while pregnant.

Question by jamesbalt2007: breaded shrimp?
If someone has an allergy to shellfish or shrimp is it possible to get a reaction from eating breaded shrimp? Or does it have to be raw shrimps? The kind they serve at a drive through place?

With most people if they have an allergy to a food, it doesn’t matter how it’s prepared. It can be in a sauce, fried, or raw, no matter what they’ll react to it.

Question by Heather B: Allergic reaction to shrimp?
About 30 minutes ago, my 10 year old son chewed a piece of shrimp but then spit it out. Almost immediately, his top lip swelled up, his mouth and nose itched, and he said his neck/throat hurt when he swallowed. I immediately gave him some Benadryl and it seems to be better. Everything went away except the swollen lip which is now getting smaller. My question is: is he okay now? I’m definitely going to set up an appointment with his pediatration to test for a shellfish allergy, but I just want to make sure he is good for tonight.
