Question by asimenia: Spots after eating shellfish, allergic reaction?
I have noticed that after I eat prawns I breakout in small white blister type spots is this to do with the shellfish? Is this a typical reaction if there’s an allergy involved. Normally when I go out to eat shellfish – I am usually going over the top in other areas (late night / alcohol / fish / smoky atmosphere (I don’t smoke but we live in Greece …)
If any one has suffered this please let me know. The spots were the worse where I had had waxing on my upper lip a few days before … no lady moustach but a nice line of blister spots! A girl can’t win
I have also posted this on allergies but thought foodies may be able to shed light on this too!
Thanks

Yes! You’re allergic to the shellfish. I’m not allergic to shellfish but I have a similar thing with penicillin, except my rash is awful and my hands and feet swell up. The waxing breakout is normal – i think they’re just whiteheads, that’s what I get. If you don’t eat shellfish before your next waxing but still get the breakout, wipe your face with a cool face towel (so the redness goes down) and then wipe it over with some cotton wool dipped in milk.

Question by jEssica_7283: When can toddlers try shellfish?
I have a 14m DS and am interested in having him try crabmeat or crabcakes – however I am unsure as to when they can start eating such foods. He eats very well and has no prior list of food allergies.

Thanks for the feedback and Happy New Year!

Fish and fish products

The Food Standards Agency recommends that you shouldn’t give any fish or shellfish to babies younger than six months, because there is a small chance that they might have an allergic reaction.

Children should also avoid eating any shark, swordfish or marlin. This is because the levels of mercury in these fish can affect the development of children’s growing nervous systems.

Don’t give raw shellfish to babies and children, as they are a high food poisoning risk food. Fish, especially oily fish, should form part of a healthy diet. Children and adults are recommended to eat at least two portions of fish each week. At least one of these should be oily. Fresh fish such as salmon, trout, cod and haddock, canned fish such as sardines and pilchards, as well as fish products such as fish fingers and fish cakes are all nutritious foods for young children. Avoid giving fish canned in brine to babies, as it is higher in salt than fish canned in oil.

- These were the two top answers I could find. I am an Early Childhood Teacher, and in my centre we provide all meals. The babies over (1) year eat the same as the other children, so eat tuna and other fish. I would think that after (1) year of age it should be fine, just ensure that it is well cooked, and watch him for any signs of Anaphalaxis.

Happy eating!! :)

Question by Bort: How do you say “im allergic to shellfish and nuts” in Moroccan Arabic?
I am planning a trip to Morocco and I am severely allergic to tree nuts and shellfish. I have less severe allergies to egg whites and other kinds of nuts and seafood, but tree nuts and shellfish will kill me. How do I say phrases like “I am allergic to shellfish and nuts and I will die if I eat them or anything that touches them” in Moroccan Arabic or Berber (which, along with french are the most commonly spoken languages in Morocco). Are these ingredients common in many types of food that are served there, and are there any specific ones I should avoid?

Shellfish includes animals with shells, such as clams, lobster and shrimp, as well as octopus and squid. You may only be allergic to some kinds of shellfish, or you may need to avoid all shellfish. While over-the-counter and prescription medications can help control symptoms, the best way to prevent an allergic reaction is to avoid the type of food that causes it.

If you or your child has a reaction to shellfish, tell your doctor about it, no matter how mild the reaction may have been. Tests can help confirm a shellfish allergy, so you can take steps to avoid future and potentially more-severe reactions.
