Question by stvnbrunner: How do i put weight on my dog with severe food allergies?
I have a 4 yr old mastiff mix that is alergic to EVERYTHING! I have found Wellness kibble and that helps but he is very, very skinny. He weighs about 75lbs and should weigh about 90-100 lbs. I have tried increasing his meal amount and frequency and adding cooked rice to his diet, but this tends to lead to stomach upset and then he wants to eat grass, which he is allgergic to. He also takes Benedryl and Prednizone for the more severe itching and skin problems associated with the itching. HELP!!!! Have gone to the vet and has had allergy testing done. The only grain he’s not allergic to is rice and fish is the only protein he is allergic to. Is there a hypo-allergenic weight gain product out there or a homemade high calorie something i can feed him? Everything i have found has corn or soy or wheat that he can’t eat.

ask your vet, there are rx diets, that can be high in fats and good for putting on weight. The clinic I work at carries Royal Canin like potato and venison, potato and rabbit, potato and whitefish, duck and green pea. Foods that dogs have never had before that way they generally don’t react to them…but yet it helps with weight.

Question by sugar’n'spice: What are some good recipes for somebody with severe allergies?
My boyfriend has severe nut, egg, wheat, pea and lentil allergies (if he eats them he’ll be dead in a minute!)

I want to cook him a meal, but i want to try something new because we eat the same things often.

Has anybody got any recipe ideas for us?

Thanks x

Not recipes but some suggestions.

Cooking oil: He is probably allergic to many oils derived from nuts or seeds. Rice bran oil is probably the least allergenic. Palm oil is also good and is semisolid at room temperature.

Flour substitute: Try rice flour, oat flour, or tapioca starch. Caution: baking powder is mostly corn starch, Feather Lite is the only one that uses uses potato starch.

Sea food: First make sure he is not allergic to shellfish. Brush lightly with oil and broil, bake or grill.

Veggies: Steam or stir fry.

Spices: Avoid spices unless you are sure that they are OK.

Milk substitute: Pacific Organic Oat is probably OK. Others are doubtful.

Don’t surprise him. Discuss every ingredient before you use it.

Question by tina: Anyone have ideas for a person with severe allergies, on where to eat out?
I have serious allergies to all seafood, all nuts, paprika, eggs, citrus, strawberries, blueberries and wheat. I have had the seafood and nuts allergy for a few years, but just yesterday i received all the others after spending a few days in the hospital for serious reactions. Any help with cooking and eating out at restaurants? I play college athletics and I have to be able to eat when we travel on days I can’t pack food. Any help at all would be much appreciated! Thank you!

Your doctor should be able to give you an answer to this. I wouldn’t want to take a chance with anything store bought unless it was prescribed to me. Has she been diagnosed, or have you found this out on your own? Either way actually she should be on a doctor monitored diet.

Question by M: I had severe allergy reaction to hair dye and milk/ milk products – are these related and is there any cure ?
Is there any cure or relief available?

No and no cure. Yea you can take like benedryl, but being exposed over and over again will only make the allergy worse and you will eventually go into anaphylatic shock.
