Question by MaluLanix0x: Could somebody have celiac disease and be allergic to wheat at the same time?
Okay, if somebody gets and itchy rash, constipation, SEVERE joint pain (on all joints and knuckles), and gets muscle aches after consuming wheat products its this usually a symptom of celiac disease/gluten intolerance or a wheat allergy? Also, could somebody have both a true immune system wheat allergy as well as celiac disease? What about being lactose intolerant and allergic to milk at the same time?

Best answer:

Answer by GF Kathy
Hi MaluLani,

Signs of an allergy usually occur within a few minutes up
to 2-3 hours. Allergy can show up as a skin reaction,
congestion, stomach pain, etc. If it is severe, and
anaphylactic, it can cause the throat to swell and make it
hard to breathe. (a medical emergency requiring immediate
medical attention). In an allergy the immune system makes
IGE antibodies. The milk allergy would also be expressed
as IGE antibodies, and happen in a short time.

If you have gluten sensitivity, the reaction could happen in
a couple of hours or even days later. The immune system
will react with IGA and/ or IGG antibodies, and it wouldn’t be anaphylactic.
Constipation or diarrhea, itchy rash, and aches are pretty
common with gluten reactions. Also headaches and being
very tired. Arthritis has been associated with celiac disease,
and the inflammation a gluten sensitivity can cause can
affect joints, muscles, skin, and even the brain.

People with untreated celiac disease usually are lactose
intolerant because the tips of the intestinal villi are the first
part to erode away, and that is where the lactase enzyme is
supposed to be produced
.
So the intestinal damage makes you unable to digest the
milk until you have been gluten free and healed long enough
to grow the tips of the villi back and make lactase again.

Also, a large percentage of people who have celiac, which
is an immune reaction to gluten, also have an immune reaction
to casein, the protein in milk.

So if your reaction comes on over several hours it is more
likely to be gluten related than a true wheat allergy. A wheat
antibody test for IGE would tell you for sure though.

Taking benadryl helps me a little if I get gluten accidentally
and get a rash.

Hope this helps.

Kathy
