Question by Satans Assistant: Milk allergy and skin test question? Read?
I’m allergic to milk. I’ve never been actually tested, though. When I consume it I get this horrible burning spot in my throat right away and my tongue itches. I also figured out that milk was the cause of me suffering recurrent sinus infections for nine years.

If I were to be skin allergy tested for milk, would it be negative because I don’t break out in rash when I eat it? I mean, if someone was allergic to milk and got a rash when they ate it then they’re test positive. But I don’t get rashes from it so would I? What test could a doctor do to actually, you know, prove that I’m allergic?

If you are indeed having an allergy to milk, a scratch test would come back positive even if it doesn’t give you hives when you consume it. I’m allergic to gluten, but I get migraines. A scratch test comes back positive though. I’m intolerant to milk, and they can’t do a test for that (well they can, but it’s invasive), the doctor will take your word for it if you say you have pain.

If you already know you’re allergic, there is no need to be tested. Just don’t consume it. Milk allergy is the most common food allergy in the world. There are a lot of different symptoms. Some people have pain, itch, get headaches, some have their tongue swell up. No one will question you about it. You already know you’re allergic. You may want to get tested for other food allergies however, for it might be possible that you’re allergic to something else like gluten.

My daughter is 14 months and also has a milk allergy. She is drinking Silk soy milk, Vanilla. She has seen a GI MD for this and also for reflux, they said as long as she is drinking a well balanced diet there is no need for anything else. She eats 3 meals a day and 2 snacks. All regular table foods, no baby foods. She is growing and gaining weight just fine.

If you want to add fat, I would first talk to your MD, she probably doesn’t need it.

Edit – I can totally understand. She doesn need those fats from meats. Have you tried the good old fashion, chicken nuggets, hot dogs and all that? Belle loves those.

Question by kirbyboy: Stool question from dry food?
About 3 weeks ago I switched my pup from Eukanuba Lamb and Rice to Natural Balance Potato and Duck. I slowly intergrated the new food so it would not upset her stomach and bowels. Her stool is still extremely light and soft. At times it is so soft like diarrehea and smells horrible! I know this can’t be good for her..any reasons why? Should I switch her food again? It appears she has a wheat allergy so I prefer a natural dry food. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Question by *Eric’s Wife* *^_^*: Milk Allergy? Long question- please help?
My daughter just turned one, and i began giving her whole milk. Before this, i had gone through different types of formula to find which would work best for her. I ended up with similac sensitive. Although the original similac and good start worked well for her for a while, she began having very loose stools 2-3 times a day, to the point of blow-outs, so i switched her back. She tried enfamil when she was an infant, but it gave her excema so bad, i took her off.

Anyways, now she is on whole milk. I only give her 4-5 ounces at meal times, and her formula 2-3 times a day for a snack. However, my husband gave her 3 8oz bottles of whole milk as her supper last night (I was out), and I told him it was only for WITH a meal, not AS a meal! lol (I think he thought of it as lazy-man’s formula lol)

4 days ago, she began having a very stuffy nose, and a lot of mucus in her throat, as well as a rash on her face. Since she has sensitive skin, I figured the rash was from all the snot drying on her face. (She was rubbing her nose with her hand constantly). But this morning, i found the excema-like rash all over her back too. Do you suppose this is from all the milk? My oldest had trouble with a milk allergy, but hers was constant spitting up and diarrhea. Ashley doesn’t spit up or have diarrhea, just a lot of mucus and a rash. I’ve been giving her a medicine for her stuffy nose (doc prescribed) but it hasn’t helped.
I really think it’s a milk allergy, but wondering about all the mucus?
She goes to the doc on friday for her 1 yr check up. For now, I think I may take her off the whole milk for a couple of days and see how she does.

Thanks for your answers!

My son went through the same thing, he was fine on similac advanced until he was about 6 months old, he started getting the runs and spitting up. The Dr. switched him to similac soy and that worked better, when he turned a year we tried whole milk but his belly just wasn’t ready for it yet so we had to switch him to soy milk (you buy it in the same cooler as cows milk). He was on that for about 3-4 months then we started mixing half soy and half whole milk to get his bellly used to it and eventually got him on 100% whole milk and he hasn’t had a problem since. I don’t think that the rash came from the milk, maybe you should try changing laundry soap or not putting as much soap in the wash when you wash her clothes, milk allergies tend to cause bowel problems and gas, not rashes. Also, if she is sleeping with her bottle at night it may be dripping down her and irritating her skin. Not sure if thats the case but just giving you some pointers!! Good luck!
