Question by CB: Does Lactose contain milk protein?
My 3 mo old has a cows milk allergy. He is breastfed and I am on a no-dairy diet meaning I eat nothing with dairy, cheese, butter, cream, whey, casein, etc.

A friend recommended Highlands Homeopathic Teething Tablets but they have lactose as an inactive ingredient. I need to know if I can give these to my son for his teething.

Any help?!?
Wow you guys give so much better answers than the ppl in the Allergies section… they have no clue what I am talking about!

I would not give it to him.

Technically lactose is a milk sugar. I am also *allergic* to milk NOT lactose intolerant. For me, Lactose specifically is the single worst part about dairy for me – so I would avoid it unless your doctor clears it.

Question by ZingaMomma: Does whole wheat bread and pasta have more allergenic protein than white? If so, which proteins are higher?
My daughter has multiple food allergies. She started having reactions to wheat and tested slightly positive to that on RAST, as well. I noticed she seems fine when she eats white bread and usually can eat white pasta without a problem. Is this because white is stripped of protein or, I was wondering if there is more of one kind of protein in wheat than in white.

i dont know about protiens, but i am wheat/oats/gluten intolerant (celiac) and i have to stay away from white and wheat bread the same b/c all white bread is, is bleached wheat flour. there really is no difference where that is concerned. try kinikinik brand rice bread from your health food store. they have a good and tastey line (rare in teh gluten free world). its not bad if you toast it.

What about Enfamil AR. Its for acid reflux. Does that have milk protein? If it does, then go to soy milk. All of my kids had to drink it because they were lactose intolerant.

Question by Kristy K: 11 mo old with Failure to Thrive-has Milk Protein Allergy, what can he drink to gain weight?
My son has been breastfed for 11 months and is only 16 lbs. He has been diagnosed with Failure To Thrive since the age of 6 mo. but he hates formula and refuses to drink it unless it is mixed with 75% breast milk. I want to change him over to other liquids that will make him gain weight, but he will boycott them because of the taste.

Although he loved Pediasure, it has milk protein (Casein) and gave him a horrible allergic reaction. Are there any high-calorie nutritious things I can give him to drink?

Please help. Thanks!
We have tried Nutramigen specifically for allergies and 2 different soy formulas.

Regular Soy milk does not have enough calories/nutrients to make him grow.

Dr’s just want him to drink more formula or high cal. drink but I can’t get him to do it.
PS. Lactose (sugar)free does not mean Casein (protein) Free, Lactose intolerance is different than a milk allergy. I feel like this is hopeless.. praying for a miracle.

i would just consult your pediatrician about something like that, they would know what is best. esp. if he has allergic reactions to things, i wouldn’t trust what someone on yahoo answers has to say, they may endanger your child.

Question by Amanda T: Has anyone had a baby with soy/milk protein intolerance that grew out of it in a few months?
My son was diagnoed with a milk/soy protein intolerance at 2 months old after having soy and milk based formulas. He spit up alot’ had blood and muccus in his stools and was very fussy. A few months later they gave him a rast test to check for allergies and they said it showed that he didn’t have any allergies. So we started giving him milk based formula. He did great. A week ago we started gradually switching to whole milk and he started spitting up more, (he has infant reflux) stuffy nose and sounds congested. The congestion comes and go’s. Now the docters says he has a little milk intolerance. The doc wants him to drink soy milk but, he says he can eat things with milk in it. The docter said he had a soy allergy before l wounder if he can tolerate soy.

My brother and cousin both had mspi and infant reflux. both were fine by the time they turned 1. The doctors said to play it safe and dont rush into milk and soy if he is still showing symptoms then he is not ready to have milk or soy. try again in a few months. other common intolerances are nuts, wheat, corn, and strawberries so it maybe any of these that are causing problems. When you decide to see if he has outgrown his tolerances then add one thing at a time. like milk and wait a couple weeks to see if anything happens then try something else. by having mspi babies have a higher risk of developing allergies to any foods later (my aunt still carries a kid epipen just incase my cousin eats something that he has developed an allergy for) good luck I know mspi can be difficult to deal with.

p.s. be glad your doctor was able to recognize mspi while your son was that young. my brother and cousin were only diagnosed after six months of screaming.
