Question by shirotsubasa: Could anyone please suggest a wheat-free & egg-free chocolate cake recipe?
My friend was recently diagnosed with a whole list of food allergies and I always feel guilty when eating my lunches in front of her. Also, one of her best friend’s birthday is coming soon. Is there a really good recipe that you can suggest?

Note: she’s allergic to egg-white, wheat, nuts and sesame seed. Those aren’t all, just those commonly present in cakes.

Question by Anthony C.: I am allergic to Wheat & Milk. Curious question. Please help me out.?
I had a blood test done and it came back that I was allergic to Wheat, Milk, and Beef (there are a few others but my question concerns these. I randomly started getting chronic hives about 6 months ago. The doctor said the hives are probably only caused by one or 2 of the 9 foods im allergic to. Is it possible that the milk and beef (anything from a cow) is what’s giving me hives, and my allergy to wheat has a completely different reaction? And if I might have a different reaction to wheat, what are the possibilities?

Question by love my life: Milk allergy in 4 month old?– Please help!?
My son is 4 months old, and we just started oatmeal cereal with him today. He likes it and is doing OK eating it. But, here is the question…

He is strictly breast fed. I either pump into a bottle or nurse him. So, today I made the cereal with formula and fed it to him. At the end, his face directly around his mouth and on his chin broke out in red blotches. Almost like hives, but not quite that bad. I washed his face, and they were gone within the hour, not to return. He is not gassy, fussy, throwing up, nor does he have diarrhea from that feeding. He actually took a really long nap as we were out running errands, something that he hasn’t done in a while. So, other than the red blotches that went away rather quickly he is showing no other sign of an allergy. I did give him some more oatmeal at dinner time, this time with some breast milk and water and there was no break out…

I have no experience with allergies. Neither me or my husband has any and my other child is allergy free as well. So, I am wondering if anyone out there has experienced anything like this, and what it may have turned out to be. Could it be the milk based allergy or the formula we used? I am a little worried, even though he is fine.

Thank you all in advance for your advice!

I’m not sure what you are seeing is a milk allergy, because you don’t see any of the digestive problems you should be seeing if he were. I think what you are seeing is irritation of the skin around his mouth from something else. An infant generally makes a mess around the chin and mouth when you are feeding them, so you use the spoon to scoop off the food that didn’t quite stay in place. The action of that spoon scraping against tender infant skin could be enough to do the trick. But to be safest, you really should stick with breast milk to add to cereal for the time being. Adding formula to the diet of a breast fed baby just adds in a risk you don’t need to add, really. His long nap after the feed is probably more related to having a really full stomach, with a food that takes more to digest than breast milk does. A stomach full of starch makes most of us sleepy, even if we aren’t infants, so it’s not a surprise he had a good nap. If you want to supplement with formula, it’s probably best if you discuss the choice of formula with his pediatrician beforehand. Most doctors would probably prefer you stuck with the breast milk, though, at least for that first year. Eating at mom’s is really the best thing for him, even if sometimes Mom has to provide “take away”.

When someone has such severe allergies the cause is usually more complicated than just treating the symptoms. I suggest you (and your parents) go to the following website and learn about hidden allergies……
