Question by tina: Anyone have ideas for a person with severe allergies, on where to eat out?
I have serious allergies to all seafood, all nuts, paprika, eggs, citrus, strawberries, blueberries and wheat. I have had the seafood and nuts allergy for a few years, but just yesterday i received all the others after spending a few days in the hospital for serious reactions. Any help with cooking and eating out at restaurants? I play college athletics and I have to be able to eat when we travel on days I can’t pack food. Any help at all would be much appreciated! Thank you!

This is obviously a transubstantiation question.

How can the “appearance” of bread cause a *real* reaction? Or is the person allergic to the body of Christ?

And the Catholic Church stipulates that communion bread must be made of wheat flour and water, with no other ingredients of substitutions.

Someone near them farted and it smelled just like peanuts due to them recently eating Thai food that contained peanut paste? We were out with some people Saturday night and had Thai for dinner. About an hour later, one of the guys beefed, and it wreaked of peanuts. His wife brought up the question after the aroma dissipated. It sounded silly at first and was worth a good laugh, but, would someone allergic to peanut have a reaction to someone else’s peanut fart vapor?

Question by PuppyLove: If a goat eats barley, can it affect a person with barley allergies?
I have an allergy to barley. If I buy milk from goats who are fed a barley diet, could I have a reaction? I’ve heard of people being allergic to soy and not being able to eat milk from soy fed animals. Is this true and would it be the same for a grain allergy like barley?

Best answer:

Answer by whatbunny
Only the very most sensitive and highly allergic people would react to this. My son has corn and soy allergies and has never reacted to corn fed beef. But from what I understand people who are hyper sensitive can react. So you should be fine, but you won’t know til you try it.

Question by .: What is the reason a person with low cortisol must not eat wheat?
I was diagnosed with very low levels of cortisol (adrenal failure). Why was I told not to eat wheat? Doctor “ran out of time” to talk and never did have the time to explain it to me.

I tested negative for celiac’s. I never was tested for food allergies. The paper from the lab had instructions to eat wheat free.

WHY??? What’s the connection between low adrenal function and no wheat diet, please? Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Jen S
I have no idea.

I have no adrenals. I eat wheat.

I was told to increase my salt intake. The reason for that is that when the adrenals do not function, salt is not retained and adrenal crisis can result. Some with AI do have to limit potassium intake as with adrenal issues, when sodium drops. potassium rises and that can be a problem.

Perhaps you need to call the doctor’s office and ask. If you cannot get a good response, then find another doctor.

Question by W(aL)D: How do I find the email address of a real live person at Taco Bell?
I know there are some @tacobell.com and @yum.com email addresses for Taco Bell and Yum! Brands execs online, but I have written to them, and have yet to receive an answer.

My inquiries via the webform (http://www.tacobell.com/feedback/feedback.asp) have gone ignored.

This is the message I’m trying to get through…

Hola, mis amigos de Titan Taco!

I’d like to express my disappointment with a commercial that I saw advertising new shrimp tacos. Well, I guess my disappointment is not with the commercial, but with the product… and the main ingredient.

I have a severe shellfish allergy, and Taco Bell has been a shellfish-free dining safe haven for me for years. It’s one of the few places where I never had to worry about shrimp, crab, lobster, oysters, etc. ending up in my food, or worse yet… crossing paths in the kitchen somewhere.

I will sadly have to cross Taco Bell off of my list of places to dine… but I’d like you to know that there are many of us out here with severe shellfish allergies who have an increasingly difficult time finding safe places to dine out. Fast food joints have long been a safe-haven for those of us with a shellfish allergy… as most fine dining and now even chain family style restaurants have several shellfish dishes prepared on multiple kitchen surfaces. Formerly, as long as I stayed away from Long John Silver’s, I was OK. Taco Bell, KFC, McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Chick-fil-A, …were all safe places.

I guess I’ll now have to get my quick Mexican fix at Qdoba or Chipotle.

If you’d like to know what it’s like to dine out with a shellfish allergy, please read this blog post.

Here’s an excerpt…

If you know me in person, have dined out with me, or have ready any of my lunacy online… you most likely know what I have a severe shellfish allergy. What does that mean exactly? Well, it means that I can’t eat any shellfish, or I go into anaphylactic shock. Not only can I not eat the shellfish (that’s crustaceans & mollusks including but not limited to ,shrimp, prawns, lobster, crab, crayfish, oysters, mussels, clams, scallops, octopi, squid, snails, and probably even scorpions and pill bugs), but I can’t eat any food that comes into contact with it. That means, if you cook shrimp on the grill, take it off, and put my steak on without washing the surface, it’s the same as me eating the shrimp.

I certainly can’t expect the restaurant to clean the grill in between every meal, as that’s certainly not productive on their end… I just usually try to see where the shellfish is prepared, and eat from another cooking surface. That seems easy enough, right?

I get that it’s my responsibility. Yes, I’ve had an epi pen. But I’d really love to not ever have the need to use one. I’ve even considered getting Allergy Cards, but they seem a little pretentious or something… like my verbal reminder isn’t enough.
Well, getting me in to a place with shellfish is an issue in itself. Why? Well in with the aforementioned cooking surface issue…

I hope that this helps explain what people like me go through, and I hope that you re-consider selling death-filled tacos!

Running from the border,
-Eric

Also… I don’t want to call or talk to them in person, looking for an email address.

Best answer:

Answer by Toilets
I guess they decided that your allergies and the people who have them were great enough risk to take to lose & went ahead with it. If you went to your local TB and handed the manager or owner a copy of your letter, maybe would be more effective way to get your word out.

Answer by Someone in MI
well, you could try to find a cornbread stuffing that has no wheat in it, you could do yams or sweet potatoes, corn, glazed carrots, broccoli and cheese casserole, roast squash. or a rice dish…

Here’s a cornbread recipe with no wheat (as far as I can tell)

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/creamed-corn-cornbread-recipe2/index.html

I like to fry a few pieces of bacon, chop up a small onion, a small tomato and a little garlic, and zucchini (in slices), using a little of the bacon fat (left from frying) to cook all of those things in. When the zucchini, onion and tomato is soft, toss in a little Parmesan cheese and salt and pepper. it’s really easy and very very yummy!!

I’ll think a little more and add to it
I strongly suspect that my American Bulldog is allergic to fish. Not just shellfish, but any fish, seems to give him a bad itch and rash. I suspect that even the Omega-3 supplement I’ve used, which is essentially fish oil, is bad for him. (But a miracle for my pug — go figure) I’m trying to pinpoint the cause of his skin allergies. Is it relatively common for a dog to have this allergy? I know several have turned up allergic to wheat or corn, but I haven’t heard of fish. Has anyone else?

Best answer:

Answer by Iggy
Yes fish has iodine, dogs and humans are allerfic to fish, they also carry a high content of mercury..do not feed dogs fish, and no dog food with fish in it, some dogs cannot tolerate the fish…
