Question by skbonnevie: For any of you parents that have a child with food allergies, do you remove all food allergens from the home?
Our 18 mo. old has recently been diagnosed as having a severe milk allergy, and she also has allergies to eggs and peanuts as well – perhaps not quite as severe as the milk allergy.

For other parents/families struggling with the same issue – do you try to “coexist” with food allergens in your house? Or do you completely remove them from the house? There are 3 of us with no food allergies at all, but is it just the safer/better option to competely get the allergens out of the house?

For those of you who keep the allergens in the house – are there any tricks for doing this safely?

Best answer:

Answer by desmeran (emeritus)
we completely removed them from the house. we were concerned not only about the allergic kids accidentally getting into the food or a clueless babysitter or someone serving it to them, but also about getting crumbs/traces on our hands or on the table or counter and cross-contaminating other foods.

*if you do keep them in the house, i’d have a dedicated shelf of safe foods in the pantry and refrigerator for the child with the allergy, and i’d also get in the habit of washing counters and tables every single time before you eat, and having everyone wash hands immediately after eating (as well as before, especially for the child with the allergy). zorro, thumbs down not from me but i’m tempted. you don’t learn to live with anaphylaxis … you can merely stay as far away as possible from the things that trigger it. one crumb can do it, and siblings make a lot of crumbs.

Question by Amber: Ever babysit a kid with allergies and their parents are stupid about it?
Seriously, this is the 2nd time this WEEK, that they have given me food that he is allergic to. He’s allergic to eggs, milk, and because of the milk issue cheese, so dairy allergies. They gave me a gerber graduates meal (which I wouldn’t feed to my children in the first place) which contained whole egg, cultured cheese, 2% milk, etc. And then I told them about it and they said, “oh, we were in a hurry and didn’t think to check.” What the crap? Your kid has allergies. When he is allergic to something he starts wheezing and you have to give him allergy medicine or a shot if it gets really bad and plus his little body rejects the food and gives him horrible diarrhea. Then, today, they gave me a granola bar to give him. It says specifically on the label. Warning contains: Milk Allergy! I really just don’t know how they could be this, excuse me for saying this but, STUPID! Anyone ever dealt with this? It’s not like they aren’t educated, she’s a obgyn nurse and the dad is a lawyer. And plus the granola bar has peanut allergies as well, and for lunch they want me to feed him a honey and peanut butter sandwich. Ugh, just needed to rant a little. If your kid has allergies you read the labels, even if they don’t you read the labels. Why would you just trust what they are feeding to your kids?
I just feel bad for the kid, his parents had him 7 years later after their first and my daughter is 4 days younger than him (14 going on 15 months) and he still doesn’t even attempt to stand, except we’ve been working on it at my house and his parents are amazed that he will let me walk him down the hall if I hold onto his hands. He doesn’t even really talk except for gibberish and the only words that he will say is “stop it”. He screams when he wants something because they didn’t teach him sign language. I’m not sure what is going on. I think he might have been an oops and their careers are way more important. When I first got him his mom told me that if I didn’t keep him in the pack-n-play he would get into everything and she was amazed that I let him use toddlerware to feed himself and he loved it and said she didn’t own any. Just grateful to be my kids mommy I guess. : )
she still spoon feeds him because she thinks it’s too messy

Best answer:

Answer by theosharatos
it’s not that they are stupid, they just dont know any better, they are not aware that something in the house is effecting them

Question by sobusy: Parents of children that had tonsils and adenoids surgery?
I would like to hear how did it go for your child , for how long did he had pain , any complications , is he doing better , the same , worse ? Does your child have allergy to milk , eggs or wheat ?
Sometimes tonsilitis is caused by allergy .
My 5 yr old will have a surgery and I am very anxious . I heard in some cases it doesn’t really help much to remove the tonsils.

Best answer:

Answer by Jessi (due Nov. 18, 2008)
Not a parent, but I remember having my tonsils out.
The pain was there for about a week, but the medication helped a lot! Recovery didn’t take long at all. I was only out of school for a week. I was still sore for longer than that, but definitely better than always have strep throat.
I had no allergies to speak of.
The surgery helped me tremendously.
Your child will be fine; just try to make him/her comfortable and be prepared to find ways to entertain him/her that don’t involve moving too much. (Maybe a handheld game)

Question by Cesaria Barbarossa – 40K: For Parents with Children with PEANUT allergies: Have you heard about this new treatment?
Apparently, they give the kids itsy bitsy amounts of peanut over a period of time and eventually the kids lose the allergy. I read it somewhere that they’ve begun trials on it and after a year or so, the children lose the allergy.

Anyone heard this or trying this treatment?

Best answer:

Answer by Bridget B
Yes. And my allergist in Houston is friends with the main person on it.
It will take a LOT of time for this to become mainstream. They tried it a few years ago and one of the children either died or had a near fatal reaction to the “treatment”. So, they stopped it for a while. Now, it is extremely controlled.

My son has a life threatening peanut allergy and personally I won’t be a part of it until it is really proven safe this time.

If anyone you know has a peanut allergy, please check out my website. I have a short animation as well as a list of peanut safe candy (there is so little!). www.judethedude.com

Right now, we have 2 allergies in my house. My daughter is 7 years old has a severe allergy to all types of nuts. I also have a 13 year old allergic to shellfish and a 5 year old who is lactose. My 16 month old was getting hives, so we took her today to get tested for a dairy and eggs allergy.

I’m really stressing now! We have to be nut, shellfish, dairy and now possibly egg free? Any parents have tips?
Hey, what can you do? We eat a lot of soy, but that sometimes get’s expensive.
The lactose issue was very sudden. Out of no where she had tummy aches after she drank dairy products. I put two-and-two together, turns out that was the problem!

Best answer:

Answer by storyinthephoto
holy crap, im sorry. what do you eat ( meaning you ) if you cant have that stuff around ?

wow, sorry honey. i dont know. my sons only allergies is to pollen and it can get severe

Question by ??PinkFuzzySocks34??: How can I convince my parents to let me go to college?
Before you read, I want to let you know that it is not a money issue, nor is it an educational issue. We do have a college fund for me (though it is nearly depleted because of my sister’s needs), and I have a 4.0 GPA.

I have had food allergies since I was born; I’m allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. This allergy is very severe and can be fatal. I can rationalize them not letting me go on class trips, field trips, etc. But now that I am in high school, I can handle my allergies. This has not been a new decision, apparently my parents talked about it even the night they found out about my allergies, when I was 2.

Now that I am about to enter my senior year of high school, I believe that this is the ultimate unfairness. I have tried to haggle and tell them that I will go to a local school about 10 minutes away from our home. They still will not let me go.

My parents are not the type to undermine an education, they want me to get an education, but this is where they draw the line
I know I will be 18 soon, but I still feel that I cannot go without their permission.
Our 9-month-old son has had two life threatening allergic reactions, the latest one being yesterday. We are waiting on a childhood allergy profile to come back, but we are afraid it might be wheat. What can you tell me (anything will help) about this? What the heck can I feed him if that’s what it is? The reactions have been so severe emergency care and timing were critical. i think it might also be because i’ve never had a reaction (i’m very careful), so they don’t think it will happen.
