Question by Piña Coladas: Can I join the Marine Corps or Military with a nut allergy?
I have a nut allergy. It is not severe enough to kill me, and if someone is eating nuts nearby, I can be near them. I can also eat things with traces or even very small pieces of various nuts and be fine. I am not allergic to peanuts or almonds though, just ones like pecans, pistachios, and those sorts. So can I join the USMC as an officer or will I disqualified?

I wouldn’t think so, but I could be wrong. Your best bet would be to ask a USMC recruiter.

Question by Dan M: Do Hay Fever, Animal, Food, and Drug allergies disqualify me from the military?
I want to join the AF, and probably do something like monitoring satellites all day from an office. I know there are really strict rules nowadays, so I’ll just have to suck it up if I can’t. I only have hay fever in spring and fall, but it’s very minor. I’m allergic to anything that has fur. As for food and drugs, I’m allergic to penicillin, peanuts, tree nuts, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, and eggs. However, there’s a very high chance I outgrew my egg allergy, or will very very soon. I outgrew a milk allergy at age 5.

I fully understand if I cannot. I’m assuming that either one or more of these things will get me DQ’d, or there are just too many.

However, I’ve heard the military will even accept a double amputee if they score high enough on the test you take at MEPS.

Just depends how bad these allergies are. Do yourself a favor, go get tested first. Best of luck to you.

Question by RT: Military Nursing. Dont know what to do! Help!?
So I was just turned down from the US Air Force Nurse Transition Program (their program for new-grads attempting to join the military as an RN) due to excessive applicants/down-sizing this year. Pretty much, as a result of the aforementioned, they said that they will NOT be accepting anything below a 3.5 CGPA (which I don’t have) or any waivers whatsoever (I have allergies to shellfish therefore I needed an SG Waiver). So my application will not undergo review. I was then told by my recruiter to go the “long route”, i.e. work in a civilian hospital for about 6 months to 1 year and reapply as a “seasoned RN”.

Here are my questions: will this make any much more of a difference?? Because if I go this route then my application will then be in competition with experienced RN’s. Why would anybody want an RN with only one year experience as opposed to another individual with say, 5+ years of experience? How different will their expectations be verses coming in the new-grad route? Should I pursue another branch such as the Army??

I hope I don’t sound too overwhelming; it’s just that I really have my heart set on serving, but if the circumstances will remain the same then maybe I shouldn’t bother. Any words of wisdom/guidance would be nice.

Thanks in advance!

you can try and go to another branch, but your recruiter has a good idea about doing some work in the civlian sector, that gives you experience which means youll know what to do=they will want you, the military always wants pepole with the experience instead of those with no clue or the info they get from a text book written buy some one who aint actually done it
