Question by paper_abby: What does a MILK allergy look like??? HELP, new mom and so confused.?
I am hoping someone can offer me some advice or help pls!! My baby is 8weeks old and has been on Similac Advance from the hospital on. He is gaining weight well and otherwise seems like a healthy baby.

BUT here is the part that I am so torn and confused about. I am at my wits end and so frustrated. Lately and actually as the weeks go on it seems like he is not doing so well on his formula. I am noticing the following:

Cramps as where he brings his legs up to his stomach
Constant hard farts but not constipated
Not finishing all his bottles and when he does finish he cries sometimes
Plus he is always, always fussy and fidgity.

WHAT is wrong?? Can someone pls tell me if it seems like he might have a milk allergy?? Do you think I should try Soy?? I mean this can not be right?

Any suggestions would be so helpful??
YES I would believe it could be an intolerance not an allergy as well. So would you think that switching to Soy would help then?

Also if I do switch him to Soy, later on in life he would be able to go back to Milk right, if he was allergic?
No he has never had bloody stools, and he did try the goodstart but it did not help either. If he has to “grow” out of this phase why would that be? Does anyone think that it could just be that?

Question by curiousperson: are there any symptons of a wheat gluten allergy in young kids..what would u look 4 before a diagnois?

Answer by momwhoknows
In my son’s case, his stool was yellowish. After removing gluten, his stool turned from yellow to brown. We did test him for wheat allergy and casein antibodies. He was negative for both. His food intolerance panel showed that he could not digest gluten. If you see undigested food in the stool, this would be a good sign indicating the need for digestive enzymes.
Some kids are diagnosed when they have a bad behavioral response to a certain food. Milk, wheat, soy, corn, and peanuts are common allergies. You can ask your dr. to order an allergy panel. Milk made a kid crazy and when this was removed, the behavioral problems disappeared.

Question by DogLover: What does a BABY MILK ALLERGY look like? Please answer only if your child had one.?
My 12 month old daughter was recently switched to whole milk. Just now, I noticed her cheeks and chin are red. Not sure if she’s red because she was out in the cold today and has sensitive skin.

What was your experience with a milk allergy?

One of my daughters had a milk allergy when she was a baby, but luckily she did fine with soy milk. She outgrew it by the time she was 2 years old. In her case, the symptoms were diarrhea and acting irritable/colicky.

from http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/allergies/milk_allergy.html# :

“Symptoms of a Milk Allergy

Symptoms of cow’s milk protein allergy will generally appear within the first few months of life. An infant can experience symptoms either very quickly after feeding (rapid onset) or not until 7 to 10 days after consuming the cow’s milk protein (slower onset).

The slower-onset reaction is more common. Symptoms may include loose stools (possibly containing blood), vomiting, gagging, refusing food, irritability or colic, and skin rashes. This type of reaction is more difficult to diagnose because the same symptoms may occur with other health conditions. Most children will outgrow this form of allergy by 2 years of age.

Rapid-onset reactions come on suddenly with symptoms that can include irritability, vomiting, wheezing, swelling, hives, other itchy bumps on the skin, and bloody diarrhea. In rare cases, a potentially severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) can occur and affect the baby’s skin, stomach, breathing, and blood pressure. Anaphylaxis is more common with other food allergies than with milk allergy.”

Question by proudmom: If a baby has an allergy to wheat products, what signs do I look for?

He’s 10 months old and we gave him a little bit of wheat bread this weekend, well a little while after he started rubbing his eyes and getting really irritated, his nose got all runny, I don’t know if its just seasonal allergies or an allergy to wheat. Thanks.
