Question by punchy333: How do I get my husband to understand that our son’s peanut allergy is a serious issue?
I really don’t believe that my husband takes our 4 yr old son’s peanut allergy (which could be fatal) seriously. He doesn’t give him peanut butter or anything that definitely contains peanuts, but he doesn’t make sure to check labels for products that “could” contain peanuts- like manufacturers who use shared equipment. He also doesn’t seem to care if other people feed him. I know people will have him in their best interest, but I’m not going to trust baked goods from someone else’s kitchen because I really don’t know what’s in it. I mean, I have found that before we discovered his allergy, I was clueless to hidden peanuts in processed and restaurant foods, and didn’t really understand all the work and time it takes into reading food labels and cross-contamination.
I wouldn’t be so concerned about this it were a food intolerance, such as milk. It won’t kill you. But this is a big concern in my book.

Today, my FIL took my son to my husband’s work for a visit during his lunch break. Yesterday, my husband was calling me overprotective because I wanted him to take his EpiPen with him. He said he wouldn’t be eating anything. And when he came home today, my son told me that one of my husband’s co-workers gave him a Little Debbie Snack Cake. So far, everything’s fine. It was a Zebra Cake, but I’m pretty sure that all little Debbie Cakes are packaged with a “shared equipment” warning. What should I say to him when he gets home from work? His defense is that nothing happened, and that I’m overprotective. I’m afraid that the only wake-up call for him would be an anaphylactic reaction. My son has already had a skin reaction from an accidental kiss from his dad after eating a no-bake cookie- and my husband didn’t seem the least bit concerned,
because “it was just a rash.” I ran out to get him Benadryl. Sometimes I just want to rip my hair out. He’s a great father in all other aspects. I just want to know what his problem is?? Help, please!

Your child comes 1st, not his opinions.
This is a tough call…it sounds to me that if he is great otherwise he has some hang-up with it. Did he have allergies that prevented him form playing sports or prevent him from a childhood activity?

Question by I’m a Mommy ?: If my husband is allergic to shrimp, should I eat them?
I’m 15 weeks pregnant and the doctors office isn’t open today to ask them so I though I’d just ask you all what you’ve heard.

My husband and his father are both allergic to shrimp. I was reading an article on what you should and shouldn’t eat (myth vs. fact) when pregnant. Two myths were shellfish and peanuts/peanut butter but then it went on to say that they were OK to eat “unless your family has a history of allergies to these foods”. Of course, I just happened to read this after a lovely fried shrimp lunch! I’ve also had shrimp several times over the last few months because it is on the “safe fish” list. I informed my doctor at my initial appointment that he was allergic to shrimp but nothing was said to me about not eating it. I was just told not to put another piece of tuna in my mouth until after the baby was born.

So, have you heard anything about avoiding foods if there is a family allergy to them?
I’m thinking of a hereditary allergy that the baby may inherit from his dad’s side of the family.

As long as it is cooked then I dont see the problem. You mainly arent suppose to eat like shark and stuff bc of the mercury in it. I eat tuna fish I put it on sandwiches and all, I have never heard that you cant eat tuna while pregnant.

A raw steak with a glass of milk?

I mean … what has he been eating for the last __ years? And veggies … like it meant every single vegetable on earth … are you sure it’s not an intolerance rather than an allergy?

Question by Lena: Help! How can I tell if my husband is allergic to wheat, gluten or something else?
I’m at a loss on what my husbands allergic to. At first I was thinking it was wheat, or yeast or gluten but now i’m lost again. He can eat tortilla shells and grapenut cereal, but can’t eat 100% whole wheat bread. He seemed fine with white bread last time he ate it, but yet he’s allergic to baked ritz crackers.
I’m so confused and I’ve looked many things up and checked labels trying to find the one ingredient that he’s allergic to just to find it on the list of ingredients in something he can eat which brings me back to square one….again.

We have gone to an allergist but he was of no help with my husbands food allergies. He refused to do a food allergy test. And yes we’ve done the writing down what he eats for a week and checking ingredients. I’m lost, i’m frustrated and I’m rather angry because i’m not getting anwhere on figuring any of this out. I’ve checked out many web sites but still haven’t been able to find much. Please help. Serious answers only. Thank you.
His tounge swells up and his throat and mouth starts itching. It’s not uncommon for his toungue to swell up for no reason (probably due to outside allergies) so when he eats stuff we tend to go by weather his mouth starts itching or not. Once we know he has a reaction to a certain food we exclude it from his diet. His list of acceptable food to eat is slim. He also can’t eat a lot of dairy because of sinus problems, and diabeties run in his family and he tends to show symptoms of that so we also try and keep sugar and other unhealthy foods out of his diet.
He’s also allergic to carrots, beets, fruit jucies, the list goes on…and all with the same symptoms.
His symptoms from degergents and perfumes are more the itchy water eyes, sneezing, hives and big red blotches.

Question by life beyond yur wildest dreams: Can you grow out of Allergy? My husband has been allergic to shellfishes…?
ever since he could remember. once he almost died because there was shrimp in his jambalaya. since being married to me, (i’m asain), i know there’s shrimp, or the flavoring…and he eats it and he’s fine…is it because he’s not eating the shrimp or lobster and its for the flavor? how do we check without him having to end up in the hospital?
the only reson i ask is because like i said since being married to me…he’s eaten small amounts of shellfish in the seasoning…for example…in kim-chee, a popular korean side dish, one of the ingredients is tiny baby shrimp thats benn marinating in a salty base. he’s also eaten soups with large shrimp in the soup…(taken out of course) anyhow…if he’s allergic to shellfish…why is he able to eat oysters, and mussels??

is the flavor real or artificial? He could go the doctor and have a test done to see if he is still allergic. I know many people who grow out of them but never a food allergy before. I say be careful and to sak a doctor.
