Question by Astafia: Could this be a sign of a gluten intolerance/allergy?
I don’t eat a lot of wheat anymore – I mostly eat legumes, fruits, vegetables, and nuts. However, I sometimes eat toasted wheat thins with hummus. It’s freaking delicious, okay? But I have noticed several times that when I eat it, my face swells up and looks really bloated. I always thought it was unrelated, but my face had been normal for weeks (I hadn’t eaten this or any other wheat really) and then as soon as I ate a fair amount of it tonight, my face swelled up and my legs are very itchy. Could this be a sign of a gluten intolerance/allergy or is it just a coincidence? I would like to know what this swelling/bloating is since it’s really ugly. Does anybody with a known gluten allergy experience facial bloating after consuming it?
I ate some more a few minutes after I posted this and my now my throat is getting really itchy…I’ve also been having trouble with milk – it causes pain in my stomach, and I just have stomach pain A LOT in general (but it’s fairly mild unless I eat ice cream or drink milk). Is there any grand way I can tie this all together or am I just really sensitive?)

It is not unusual for people to have sensitivities or allergies to more than one food. You may be intolerant of both wheat and dairy. Or it could be something else. Discuss it with your doctor the next time you are there. My aunt has celiac disease, and had abdominal pain and diarrhea, but no swelling of her face. You may be different since according to the Mayo Clinic there really aren’t any truly typical symptoms of celiac disease..

Question by Natalié Van Hildenberg: does gluten & wheat free diets get rid of phlegm.?
for a few months now I have been coughing up clear phlegm… It started getting worse with bigger chunks coming up and a constant feeling of phlegm in my throat with my nose feeling constantly stuffy. I always feel like I have to cough every 2 seconds and blow my nose. I had some kinesiology allergy tests done and it showed up that I was sensitive to wheat , dairy products & potatos. I was advised to go on a wheat & gluten free diet and cut out the dairy & potatos all together. I was just wondering if anyone else had a problem with phlegm and this sort of diet helped to shift it? Also in the morning my chest feels congested when I first wake up. I have mild asthma but the doctor’s are persistant in saying that this is not asthma related. I have even been told to come off my inhalers by the asthma clinic but I cannot seem to manage it. Replies will be appreciated.
p.s I have been to different doctors had 3 courses of antibiotics and it did not lift. The phlegm is clear so it is not an infection.

I think you’ll find your diet will help. My thing was milk. When I quit it took a few weeks but it worked.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Question by Lin: I have a gluten allergy?
And I was wondering if it will do any harm to use wheat or gluten products on the outside of my body. For example, I cleanse my face using oatmeal and my current body cleanser is st. ives oatmeal and shea butter body wash. I’m trying to follow a gluten free diet for a few day to see if my puffy eyes will reduce, and was wondering if continuing to use these products will aggravate my allergy and work against the results i want to see of my puffy eyes.

If your reaction were digestive then no. However, since it is manifesting itself in your eyes, I would suggest that you try giving these products up for a couple of days and see if it makes a difference.
Unfortunately, everyone is different and no one on here will be able to give you a definitive answer without you actually trying it.

Question by Claire: Level 4 Gluten allergy?
My baby girl is 25 mnts and is allergic to Gluten. This may sound ridiculous, but the allergist was so unhelpful he just blew off the fact that she is allergic to wheat like its not a big deal? Apparently she has a level 4 allergy. What dose that mean? i could not find to much about it online.

You should take your daughter to a different physician. Ask questions if there is anything you don’t understand. Allergies to wheat is a big deal because it’s in a lot of foods.

Vegan lunch box does a VERY good job of having recipes with no gluten or soy. Plus it is vegan so no milk either. If you eat meat you can always add some meat to the recipes she provides.
Gluten-free Goddess also has a good amount of stuff you might like.
Basically, look up gluten-free with regards to starch, and vegan with regards to dairy. That’ll make it much easier to find recipes (and products that you can sub into recipes), since soy and peanuts can be cut out from there. Wheat is covered under gluten so you don’t have to specifically look for wheat-free.
