Our 18 mo. old has recently been diagnosed as having a severe milk allergy, and she also has allergies to eggs and peanuts as well – perhaps not quite as severe as the milk allergy.

For other parents/families struggling with the same issue – do you try to “coexist” with food allergens in your house? Or do you completely remove them from the house? There are 3 of us with no food allergies at all, but is it just the safer/better option to competely get the allergens out of the house?

For those of you who keep the allergens in the house – are there any tricks for doing this safely?

we completely removed them from the house. we were concerned not only about the allergic kids accidentally getting into the food or a clueless babysitter or someone serving it to them, but also about getting crumbs/traces on our hands or on the table or counter and cross-contaminating other foods.

*if you do keep them in the house, i’d have a dedicated shelf of safe foods in the pantry and refrigerator for the child with the allergy, and i’d also get in the habit of washing counters and tables every single time before you eat, and having everyone wash hands immediately after eating (as well as before, especially for the child with the allergy). zorro, thumbs down not from me but i’m tempted. you don’t learn to live with anaphylaxis … you can merely stay as far away as possible from the things that trigger it. one crumb can do it, and siblings make a lot of crumbs.

Questions here routinely have “and I’m allergic to wheat, eggs, soy, etc, etc” added to them.

You never heard that not so many years ago; similarly, nobody batted an eye about peanuts.

What’re the theories about why this is on the rise?

And — no offence to the so-afflicted — but is any of this “it gives me a bit of digestive trouble” rather than actual “allergy”?

I have had ceoliac disease since i was 2years old. I have been ‘trained’ to avoid anything to do with wheat which is generally pretty easy to determine. I read an article somewhere which stated that although glucose syrup (from wheat) is saying it says it contains wheat, the glucose syrup is so highly processed that it actually does not contain gluten. Curious I asked my gastroentoroligist and he said that the article was right and I can have it without a reaction. This makes sense as most ‘no frills’ supermarket brands have now got an ‘allergy advice’ part on their label which say whther it has gluten and recently i was reading the ingredients on ice cream that said glucose syrup from wheat and yet in the allergy advice section it said that it only contained milk. Unfortunately, my ‘training’ refuses to allow my brain to believe that I can actually eat it despite it having wheat.. Just wanted to get some more answers on this interesting dillema.. Is it gluten free?

I understand your hesitancy. I am the same way. I tend to avoid anything labeled as derived from wheat, even if it is considered “safe”. Wheat starch is also considered to be safe, yet I react to it. So for me, if I came across something with glucose syrup derived from wheat, I would not eat it. Yet I see posts from others who say they are fine. I believe it is a matter of individual sensitivity.

I keep developing more and more food allergies. First I became lactose intolerant. Then couldn’t eat peanut butter or sunflower seeds. Now it seems I have suddenly become gluten (wheat) sensitive. And that last one came on suddenly after a lifetime of eating, and baking, whole grain bread. Has anybody else had a food allergy start late in life without warning?

About 3 weeks ago I switched my pup from Eukanuba Lamb and Rice to Natural Balance Potato and Duck. I slowly intergrated the new food so it would not upset her stomach and bowels. Her stool is still extremely light and soft. At times it is so soft like diarrehea and smells horrible! I know this can’t be good for her..any reasons why? Should I switch her food again? It appears she has a wheat allergy so I prefer a natural dry food. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i used to eat panadol 11 tablets in a day” thats max” and some times around 7 or so .. that days i used to drink coffee with powder milk for around 2 week i was like that .. the 3rd week i stoped and i noticed that my chest n my back got red small spots “like pimples” i went to the doctor he told me that i got allergy to milk ,, i didnt tell him that i used to eat panadol that much ,, so did i get my milk allergy from panadol? and when i stoped drinking milk it still didnt go i just dnt knw wat to do :( !

I dont think you have a milk allergy and the panadol would not have caused it if you have. Go back to your Dr and talk about things

I don’t eat any dairy. Could it be a wheat allergy? I had my thyroid tested a few years ago. It was fine. What could it be? I do drink a lot of water but I also urinate a lot. (my glucose level is fine). It’s like the face of an obese person on days and I’m not fat.

My son is 1 yr. old now and has been on Similac Alimentum since he was 3 months old due to cow milk protein allergies and some reflux. I have been doing half formula and half whole milk for about a week now. He has had some weird bowel movements.. today it was orange. He has anywhere from 4-6 a day.. which is not normal for him. Is this a normal result from the transition to whole milk or should I be concerned. Any help would be appreciated. (:

my son is 6 months so i have some time before i go through this maybe try lactad milk my 10 year old brother was lactose intolerant and that’s what my mom had to get but he grew out of it
