Question by Shan: If a baby has a possible milk allergy, can you still feed them formula w milk contents to supple breast milk?
My baby has a sensitive stomach and we are in the process of trying to see what works best for her. I put her on soy formula to supplement breast milk and it seems to have constipated her. I have heard that soy is not good for them and that the milk content in formulas is different that what they get from breast milk. Not even for sure she has milk allergy just trying to eliminate that if she is or is not. Now I cant give her soy formula. She seems ok on regular formula but I thought she might have a reaction and it is hard to know if it is breast milk or the formula causing symptoms. She is going to see a ped next week but just thought someone might have some advise.

If you drink milk, then there is also milk in your breast milk, so most likely not an allergy. The baby might just have acid reflux if she has a sensitive stomach. I would find out for sure what is wrong from the doctor before switching everything.

Question by paleozoictraveler: Is there an inexpensive way to feed a dog that’s allergic to everything?
My dog is allergic to the following: Pork, turkey, soy, peanuts, most kinds of rice, dairy products, and tobacco smoke, and every variety of grass, excluding corn and wheat.
It costs a fortune to feed her, and the above items are just them most serious of her 3-page allergy list! When she comes into contact with an allergen, she loses her fur and her skin breaks out in bloody leisions. Her moth bleeds and she gets indigestion really bad. We currently feed her Purina One Sensitive, but is there a brand that doesn’t cost as much?

I suggest you talk to a competent pediatrician or nutritionist about this, it sounds like a serious and unusual problem. It’s strange he would be allergic to both, there may be some underlying problem. You need to make sure he’s getting enough vitamins as well, with such severe allergies he could be deficient.

Question by Amber: what to feed a child with milk, egg, and peanut allergy?

Best answer:

Answer by Woofers
…anything that doesn’t contain milk, eggs or peanuts. Look at the ingredient list of a food and make sure it wasn’t processed in the same area as products that contain the allergens too. Pretty easy to do. Keep on the lookout for milk (skim, 2%, fat free, powdered, etc), whey, eggs and egg whites, peanuts and peanut oil. Try to stick with vegan or gluten-free products; the manufacturers usually keep allergies in mind. ALWAYS read the label before giving anything to them, even if you think it’s safe. Just about anything can contain peanuts, eggs and milk.

Question by Susan S: I’ve been eating peanut butter, dairy, eggs… I also breast feed. Will my DD get an allergy?
My daughter is 4 months old. Someone I know discovered the peanut butter she was eating caused her son to get a peanut allergy. So far, DD has no allergies. Neither me nor my husband have food allergies. Will eating peanut butter cause an allergy in my daughter? Or any other food, for that matter?
Obviously, I didn’t realize eating these foods could cause problems. I thought they were to be avoided only if allergies run in your family.

My ped. told me to eat whatever I wanted. I did, and my daughter has no allergies that I am aware of.

You can spend your whole nursing relationship fretting about what you eat. Just eat healthfully and drink enough water and you will be fine!
