Question by Cindy: Dog allergy/ skin problem help? (People with experience)?
Ok, so I have a black lab mix (after reading some questions on here it seems black labs are prone to skin problems?) who has chronic skin infections, itching, food allergies, and anything else you can name in the book.

I have taken my dog to two different vets. We have had him for nine months and he has had four skin infections. He is constantly scratching, and biting his bum area. My former vet didn’t want to figure out the problem, he just wanted to cover it up by giving him a supplement that made him shed less. I took him to another vet who said loosing hair around his butt area is always food allergy. So, since nobody around here does allergy testing ( I don’t know why?) I have been trying to figure out what my dog is allergic to by process of elimination.

So far I have eliminated all forms of chicken, wheat, corn and rice from his diet. This has all helped but has not made his itching and scratching go away. I stopped feeding him a supplement which my former vet was having me give him, called theracoat (which is for dry, itchy skin), because my new vet says that is just going to cover up the problem, not solve it. So since I have stopped, he has not recovered at all from this last skin infection (he got three weeks ago). He is no longer bleeding from his itchy spots, but he is still scratching and itching like crazy, and still has bald spots as a result. I give him benadryl when his itching gets out of control, but I don’t want to constantly cover up his problems! I have put him on a food that is venison and sweet potato. What other food allergy could he possibly have? Oh, I also bath him regularly with a oatmeal shampoo that is soap free and hypoallergenic.

Thanks!
He doesn’t have ringworm, he’s been checked for that one!

Are you washing his bedding in detergent?

Don’t bathe much at all. 5 times a year is plenty. Over bathing causes skin problems.

Throw a little fish oil on the grain free food.

Don’t keep changing the diet. It takes months to know if a food is working.

Stop vet shopping.

Question by adra02: Anyone experience this?: Milk Allergy?
My 2yr old had an allergy test done, it showed he has a milk allergy. I understand that because of the milk allergy he should be able to consume soy or almond milk but I notice when he drinks those he sometimes have a few similar reactions as he did with cow’s milk.

My questions are:
1) Why didnt it show he had an allergy to soy?
2) How accurate are these allergy tests?
3) What were your experiences if youve experience a similar situation?

I already have another appointment set up just wanted to hear a little feedback from others who have experienced the same. Thanks.
also he recently had his adenoids removed.

I didn’t have testing done and found out about 10 years ago I had an allergy to milk. This year I had to have sinus surgery due to polyps so many that I almost couldn’t breath. Its sounds disgusting really I know only too well. My eyes and air ways would swell if I had anything with milk in it. Soy was just as bad for me so I took calcium pills and did without milk.

I could have cheddar cheese without problems also goats milk never affected me. Some people say it stinks I don’t know. Powdered milk and can milk caused me less of a problem if any.

I have never had the allergy test done because I don’t want them putting me through all of that to find out what I already by trial and error have discovered. Because they have you sign a paper also where in they say many things I did not want to sign away on.

If my child had a problem with allergies at 2 years old I would start with wholesome earthy foods. Buy local especially meats, eggs (I can sometimes eat eggs sometimes I hate them) just make sure your food is fresh as possible and with out chemicals.

God bless? P.s. check everything in your fridge for HFCS its so terribly bad

hi all.
i have one year old son. he has a stuffy nose and dry caught(during the night). i took him to the doctor, and he has prescribed lots of medication but nothing seem to be helping. now i’m concerned can it be a milk allergy that causes the stufiness and caught?

Take him off of milk products for a few weeks to see if he clears up. I think that’s the only way to know for sure. It’s certainly possible if you breastfed before that, if you used regular formula it’s made with cow’s milk so you would have had trouble then as well.

Question by shooky: My son’s food allergies increased significantly – anybody else have similiar experience?
I recently had my son retested – blood testing. He is allergic to milk, egg, peanuts and tree nuts. Everything increased. My concern is the increase in the peanuts which went from a 12 to over 100. Can anyone out there relate and share their experience?

My middle son had food allergies so bad, that until he was 10 or 11 yrs. of age, he had to eat certain brands of baby foods;he was allergic to :sugar substutite(ALL), strawberries, cantalops, watermelon, not persay peanut butter (but the oil), red dye,[could have anything with red food coloring in it, red dyes with a certain number like 14 or 18,But now he is 24 yrs.old and none of his allergies that he had as a child they don’t bothers him. He’s 24 as I said, weight is 175 lbs. 6′ 4″, so maybe your son will grow out of his allergies,I pray he does.

Question by RearFace@18mo.: An experience in allergies or asthsma with your little one, any help?
My baby has had a lot of chest congestion for a few months now (he is 5 1’2 months currently). He has had some albuterol a while back. The ENT said he has some drainage in his ears, but nothing big. He has been vomiting more and more, but not a milk allergy. The doctor has prescribed a steriod called Prednisolone. It lasts for 9 days. On the package, it says for allergies, asthma, arthritis. Well, has anyone experienced thier baby having allergies or athsma and what were their symptoms? How did you find out what was going on? What did you do to help? Any ideas would be helpful in your experiences. Thanks.

P.S. We have switch formulas and it didn’t help. I also think it could be reflux, but I am not sure, the doc and I are tring to figure it out.
Also, if you used this medicine, what happened?

Your baby must be very sick for prednisone to be perscribed. It is an anti-inflamatory. It is very effective. If it is taken for a long time (months) it has lasting side effects.

You need to get more info from your doctor and not from us. Does he expect this to be a one shot deal, or a regular problem? Did the albuterol help, and if so?

If your child is asthmatic, prednisone isn’t the solution for the long run. It is an emergency med to get your child over a difficult period. Symptoms, difficulty breathing and not sleeping well.

I’m not an expert, though I am an asthmatic. I can say that your story doesn’t quite add up. You need to take notes in the drs office, and ask more questions.
