Question by Candace B: Are you born with a peanut allergy or can it develop with time?
My 6 year old is allergic to strawberries (since birth) amoxicillin (since birth) and recently started getting hives from Almonds. He has eaten peanuts in the past and eats peanut butter and jelly occasionally with no problems but within the last year he has been getting hives after eating almonds. I have stopped him from eating them however since he never had a problem with peanuts i let him eat PB&J. Today the nurse called me and told me my son was in her office with hives and that it happened after eating a snack of Peanut butter on celery. When he came home he was covered in hives and I gave him an oatmeal bath with Aveeno. Why is this happening all of a sudden? I have a doctors appointment for Thursday but I was just wondering if anyone else developed an allergy to peanuts suddenly? He also has seasonal allergies and Eczema that he got from both myself and his father.

Food allergies can develop over time. Smaller symptoms may have been there that weren’t even noticeable. And since it wasn’t noticeable it could’ve gotten worse and developed into a hives problem. Things with the immune system can cause intolerance to certain foods.

Question by JenasaurusX: How common is it it to develop soy allergies late in life?
I can’t believe it, but it would appear that I am developing an allergy to soy. I didn’t seem to have any problems before when I was just a regular old vegetarian, but since I’ve cut out dairy and eggs I have been eating a lot more soy (soy cream, soy milk, soy cheeses, on top of the usual soy meat substitutes and tofu). It’s been about two months since I’ve increased my soy intake. About a week or so ago I started getting mild hives. They seem worst at night (like an hour or so after dinner where I usually get the most soy) and tend to go away for the most part during the day, but I had tofu for lunch and didn’t have a very severe reaction, so I don’t know what’s going on. I am going away for the night tomorrow and plan on eating a lot of soy so that I can rule out an allergy to my cat. I typically do not have allergies, although I did get hives a lot when I was a kid. Does it sound normal to get an allergy late in life like this? Are hives a common symptom of soy allergies? Thanks!
P.S. I’m asking here because I know other vegetarians will have more experience with soy related questions than most others and I recall a few people mentioning soy allergies here before.
Oh my gosh, such good information here. I just can’t thank you all enough. I’m going to leave the question up for a while to see if I get anymore responses. You guys rock!

I don’t know anything about soy, but I did hear before that your body changes every 7 yrs., so it is a possibility for you to become allergic to something late in life.

I’m not sure if sniffing it would, but touching them can cause a reaction if the allergy is serious and if you eat them when you have an allergy, it will get worse.

Question by Jello: Why did I suddenly develop a food allergy?
I’m 23 and I almost died of anaphylactic shock. After 3 days in the hospital I discovered I’m suddenly allergic to shrimp and all shellfish. Why all of the sudden? I wouldn’t say I’ve eaten an abnormal amount of seafood in my life but I never had a reaction before. Why did I suddenly develop this allergy now even though there is no family history? I have no other allergies and yet this so severe. Why?!

There is no way to know. You can develop allergies at anytime during your life, even if you were not allergic before. It is odd that you would have such a strong reaction so suddenly that you almost died but it does happen. Just thankfully your ok, so you can stay away from shellfish now. Good Luck!

Question by nicky.pacific: Can a person develop a shellfish allergy after NEVER being allergic before? ?
I grew up on the Oregon coast, lived there for 16 years and ate seafood almost constantly. About four years ago, on my parents’ anniversary, we had lobster. I had to be rushed to the emergency room. From then on, I avoided lobster, however have still been eating crab, oysters, clams, shrimp, scallops, etc. with no noticeable issues. About a month ago, my boyfriend took me to Red Lobster. I ate lots of shrimp, a bit of crab, fish and one tiny bite of Lobster. I was dizzy, nauseous, had stomach cramps, my heart was thumping hard in my chest and I was having a hard time breathing. I chalked it up to eating TOO much of it all. A few weeks ago, we had crab at his house. Same result. Two nights ago, we had tacos, he put four medium shrimp in my taco and by the time all four had time to hit my stomach, I was starting to feel a bit woozy. So, needless to say, I’m a bit paranoid of my favorite food. Is it possible to develop an allergy to something after a history of none?

Absolutely. My step-father ate seafood all the time and one day he got really sick after eating shrimp and hasn’t been able to eat in since. The allergic reaction just came out of no where after 35 years of eating seafood.
