Question by violinest421: Can you develop an allergy later in life?
I have a few questions about allergies actually, particularly food allergies.

Can you develop a food allergy later in life? like could you all the sudden become lactose intolerant?
or become allergic to gluten? or peanuts?

Is it possible to become allergic to a food that you haven’t eaten in a long time? Like say you stopped eating wheat for 3 years then all the sudden started eating it again, could your body be intolerant to it?

Lastly can you grow out of an allergy? like you were allergic to peanuts as a kid, could you grow out of that?

I know these are weird questions, but if you could answer any of them that would be great!
thanks.

I can answer one part of your question.
I became Lactose intolerant at 22 years old.
I used to eat dairy products all the time, they were a regular part of my diet.
But then I discovered they were making me sick. I even tried pills to fix it but they didn’t work.
I think your body can run out of the chemicals it needs to break down certain foods.
Take care

Question by the_girl_collector: Has anyone found that they develop a migrane shortly after eating Subway sanwhiches?
I have heard a rumour that Subway doesn’t use natural flower but something else. I have been suffering terribly from migranes and trying to get to the dietary source of the problem. At first, I thought it might be the nitrates in sandwhich meats, but have found that I still get migranes if eating tunafish from Subway. So I am thinking I might have a “wheat” allergy.

Now you might ask, why do I eat as Subway if I get migranes? Because I noticed the pattern and am now trying to settle on the source. I get migranes outside of eating as Subway, also when eating meats and bread… anyway, any thoughts?
Yes, I am aware it is “flour” not flower, but I was typing quickly. Thanks for the responses so far. As for the taco bell comment, if you do the research you will find that they create their own flour for their bread, in order for it to have a certain consistency of size, texture etc…

Glutten is somthing to consider.

I sure hope Subway doesn’t use ANY “flower” in their subs.

If I got a migraine after eating, I would keep a journal and write down EVERYTHING that I had eaten prior to the onset of the migraine. After a month, I would find the common denominators and start narrowing it down like that.

Question by Rachel Garcia: Can a kitten develop an allergy to its mother’s milk?
I have a three week old kitten who has begun to shed its fur. I took him to the vet today, but the vet had zero answers as to why this was happening.

Is she losing the fur in patches or is it a general hair thinning?
If you have ruled out all other possible causes and as she is so young and small, she could be suffering from stress. This can show as excessive grooming. If she is a pedigree, they can be more sensitive than ‘moggies’ so are more prone to stress, but ‘moggies’ can still get this. If she is one of six, she may be finding it hard to establish her place in the tribe and may need extra love and encouragement until she settles.
The other possibility is that she has an allergy to something she eating.
She may need to see a vet to find out the real cause of this but that is just a couple of suggestions for you to work on for now.
Hope that helps and you are able to sort this out soon, best of luck.

This happened to a cat of mine, she was also a little smaller that the other cat, and a lot more active. I took her to the vet and he diagnosed her as having hyperthyroidism. She got put on medication–which would be needed forever. Later the cat got tired of taking the pills and ran away from home! Anyway the fur was thinning like you describe and not falling out in patches or clumps. You need to take the cat to the vet and if he doesn’t check the thyroid you might suggest it.

IDN, but paying co-pay to find out is well worth your time. Nothing worse than having your throat close up when you didn’t expect it to. Get it checked out.

Good Luck

Question by Daniel: Is it possible for a peanut allergy to develop later in life?
I love peanuts and eat a small handful of them every day. Lately, however, I’ve had a lingering strange feeling in my throat almost like a sore throat. It’s really bad right before I go to bed and in the morning, but during the day it’s almost non-existent. However, I eat the peanuts a couple of hours before I go to bed. I don’t feel any other symptoms of a peanut allergy and don’t have any trouble breathing. I’ve had this “sore throat” for over a week now, and it’s driving me nuts (no pun intended).

As much as I hope the answer is “No, they’re not the cause”, please be blunt and honest!

Yes! I have a peanut allergy (confirmed by pin prick tests) and have eaten peanuts all my life. When I stop eating them I get a reduction in Eczema but that’s about all. The doctor said that this allergy developed over time.
Your sore throat could be heartburn. Allergy symptoms are usually itchy pallet (roof of the mouth), itching inside ears, itching throat, swelling of lips and throat, difficulty breathing etc. Good luck, see a doctor.
