hi..i have severe peanut and all nut allergies. i deal with them by being careful with what i eat and checking the ingredients before i eat ANYTHING..even if it is something i have eaten before, the ingredients could have changed since the last time i ate it. i also make sure that if i am with someone who is eating any type of nuts and peanut butter i explain to them that i have allergies and ask them to please wash their hands. it means a lot when they do and i feel more comfortable and safer around them. if i am at a restaurant, i always ask what is in the food that i am ordering. it can be very scary, but it is easy to deal with after a while..i also carry my epi-pen and benadryl everywhere i go (:

Question by BELLY PRINCESS: How do I help my 2yr old deal with his new found peanut allergy?
I gave my son one bite of bread with a very thin smear of peanut butter. Won us a trip to the ER. He got a bad case of hives. His eyes and ears were swollen. He went to an allergist and tested pos. for peanut allergy. Next week we’ll blood test to rule out tree nuts. My dilemma is if it’s not mandatory for manufactures to list products made in a peanut facility how seriously should I take this? We now have an EPI pen. If somehow he is introduced to a food that’s made in the same factory as peanuts could this possibly build his immunity and help him outgrow the allergy. Or should I just take extreme measures and create a peanut free bubble for my son. DOES ANYONE WITH A PEANUT ALLERGY HAVE ANY ADVISE?

I think you will just need to watch very closely what he eats.

Question by Road Runner For Life <3: Does anyone else suffer from chronic hives? If so, how do you deal with it?
I have had chronic hives for 7 years and I get hives pretty much everyday. I have been on every antihistamine possible and I am now taking a light dose of prednisone because I had a bad flare up of hives last week (ended up in the ER twice). I have seen many doctors who all say that I will outgrow this, but 7 years later I am still living with chronic hives. I have had thyroid and immune system tests that have come back ok and I have been tested for many other food allergies. Does anyone else suffere from this? Does anyone know of any foods that I can be tested for that are not as obvious (I have been tested for wheat, oat, corn, milk, chocolate, tree nuts)? Thanks!

Hives treatment by eliminating the triggering factor

It is very important to know the cause of allergic reaction. Once you found out the triggering agent, it becomes very easy to fight the battle.
Hives treatment by using cool compression

By applying the cool compression it may help to provide some relief from the pain and itch.
Hives treatment by using calamine lotion

By applying this lotion it can grant you relief from the itchy feeling.
Hives treatment by using milk of magnesia

By dabbing milk of magnesia on the lesions, provides some relief. As milk of magnesia is an alkaline solution it helps in removing the irritating itchy sensation.
Hives treatment by using herbal tea

Calming our nerves is one of the important things to do, as stress makes the matter worse. Drinking peppermint or passionflower tea is very good. You can also try chamomile, valerian and catnip which also soothe your nerves.
Hives treatment by using cornstarch

To stop the itching get 1/2 a tub filled with warm water, add 1/2 cup cornstarch and 1/2 cup baking soda. Soaking yourself at least once a day can make a lot of difference.
Hives treatment by using aloe vera gel

Applying aloe vera gel or vitamin E oil to the affected area at least twice a day can benefit you a lot.
Hives treatment by using nettles

Have nettle tea which is made by 2 tsp. powdered stinging nettles. You can add honey or lemon to add flavor your tea.
Hives treatment by using cayenne pepper

Consume cayenne pepper capsules to help the healing procedure. You can also have vitamin C, vitamin E or zinc for quick relief.

Question by bella: How do I deal with this?
My son is about to start school next week and we just got back from our parent teacher meeting. This year there is a child in school that has an allergy to nuts/tree nuts. Therefore all nut products are banned from school. No big deal, we aren’t big peanut butter eaters and my son prefers cream cheese and jelly sandwiches. So it will not be a problem at all. But this part is. The parents of this child are now demanding that we not eat any peanut products or products manufactured in a plant that manufacture nut products. These people are actually telling us how to eat in our own homes. If I want to bake a batch of chocolate chip cookies for an after school snack for my kids, I can’t. If I eat a granola bar before picking up my son from school I have to shower and change clothes. These parents are refusing any type of compromise regarding the peanut products at home.

Now there is another family saying that their child is allergic to milk/wheat, they now want to ban dairy products and wheat products from lunch.

Another parent has a child severely allergic to pet dander from cats/dogs, and want families to now put their children’s school clothing in plastic bags and also put their backpacks in bags as well so their child doesn’t get exposed to pet hair.

What are we supposed to do? I am all for protecting these kids, but is this going too far? I have two children that I am responsible for and now I’m responsible for the health and well being of all of these others. What am I supposed to do? If I send the wrong thing to school I can kill someone, and now I am responsible for that.

Do you think that maybe we should home school our children so that something they eat doesn’t kill someone? What should we do?

That is absolutely insane. That school is putting the needs of 1 child over the need of every other regular child in the school.

I think there should be a committee set up to protest against all the precautions. I totally understand the nut allergy concerns as this is fatal. But stop the kids bring nut products in their packed lunches and thats it. Anything beyond that is nuerotic!

Question by Beth: HOW DO I DEAL WITH A FOOD ALLERGY IN CHINA?! PLEASE HELP!!?
I am travelling to China on a school trip for ten days; we leave thursday morning. I am allergic to shellfish and tree nuts which are common for Chinese cuisine and I’m concerned. I have an epipen but I really don’t want to have to use it. How can I tell if there are shellfish or tree nuts in my food? Please help me! I don’t want to spend my vacation puking and in hives!

Simple answer: you can’t.

From the menu you can predict the main ingredients, but i.e. shellfish products (such as shrimp paste, Oyster sauce) may be used. Same for nuts, peanut oil is very commonly used in China.

There is always white rice that you can eat. Western fast food such as McDonalds and KFC are also very common. Some ethnic cuisine such as XinJiang (Muslim food) should also be quite save as its more meat based.

In other places, you need somebody that speaks Chinese to have the dishes really explained. Ask also you classmates to investigate each dish.

PS: Instant noodles may contain peanut oil. Even if you can read the ingredients in Chinese I doubt they have the exact oil type mentioned.

PPS: Cross-contamination in restaurants can certainly be a big problem. White rice will be always clean though.
