Question by Britt: Can nasal Congestion be the only sign of cows milk allergy? ?
Been having some problems with breastfeeding and my 2 month old son having allergies. I cut out milk and soy for two weeks and he continued to have green loose stools. From this I assumed milk was not the culprit. However his nasal congestion had cleared up a bit. I then cut out wheat and his stools are returning to normal. I assumed wheat was the problem so I introduced milk into my diet again. Now his nasal congestion has been worse. Could the congestion be the only sign of milk allergy? His stools are still normal and I’ve been having milk for 5 days now.

It sounds to me it is not the food/ milk it sounds to me he might have a sinus infection. I guess when you say milk you mean formula. loose green stools are normal as long as they are not 10-20 times a day. when you child has a milk protein allergy they normally co-aside with a fierce diaper rash…

Question by Angie: If milk allergy runs in family… should I even bother trying to introduce cows milk to my son??
Both my mom and my husband’s mom, my husband, and I, get really sick with milk. It does not matter if it is lactose-free. My son had violent vomiting when the hospital gave him milk-based formula, so we immediately switched him to soy and he is doing great. Given our family histrory with cow’s milk, should I even bother introducing it to him when it is time to go off formula? How can I make sure he is getting enough calcium – what are some first foods that he can eat that are dairy-free but have calcium?

Instead of cow’s milk, try soy milk. Available next to cows milk in the dairy section. It will provide all the same nutrients and then some. Talk to your pediatrician to make sure.
There are some benefits to cows milk, but nothing that your son has to have for the second year of his life ( I assume he will be 1 soon).
My son has drank breastmilk and then soy milk. He’s 17 months old. I give him small amounts of regular yogurt and tons of cheese for calcium. But if your son can’t have that, then talk to your pediatrician about alternatives.
Good luck!

Question by Henrys Mummy: Mums will u be moving ur LO on 2 cows milk when they turn 12 months?
I have read that you shouldnt move babies on to cows milk until they are 24months!! Apparently cows milk if introduced early can cause allergies and other illnesses.
I know sma progress can be given up to 24m.
My LO will 12m in 10weeks. I know most mums change to cows milk at 12m because it is obviously a lot cheaper.
Just wandering what other mums plans are?

I tried cow’s milk at 12 months and it makes her so constipated!!! Now I just give her calcium and vitamin D through other sources, but I continue to give her breastmilk and water. I’ll probably try cow’s milk again when she’s 18 months or so. I think this is pretty common when switching to cow’s milk.

Milk is pasturized. Any germy things in it are killed off. I think the whole milk drinking/runny nose thing is a myth.
