Question by mommmy4: Likelihood of being allergic to sunflower seeds when allergic to peanuts?
My 4 year old is allergic to peanuts. Someone said to try sunflower seed butter as a sub for peanut butter. I read online that sunflower seed allergy is rare – 30 diagnosed cases per year, but then read lots of other stuff saying to avoid it. What to do? I tried to sunflower butter today and it was pretty good. I know he’d love it. Does anyone know if there is an increased likelihood that he will have an allergy to sunflower seeds?

Question by nicky.pacific: Can a person develop a shellfish allergy after NEVER being allergic before? ?
I grew up on the Oregon coast, lived there for 16 years and ate seafood almost constantly. About four years ago, on my parents’ anniversary, we had lobster. I had to be rushed to the emergency room. From then on, I avoided lobster, however have still been eating crab, oysters, clams, shrimp, scallops, etc. with no noticeable issues. About a month ago, my boyfriend took me to Red Lobster. I ate lots of shrimp, a bit of crab, fish and one tiny bite of Lobster. I was dizzy, nauseous, had stomach cramps, my heart was thumping hard in my chest and I was having a hard time breathing. I chalked it up to eating TOO much of it all. A few weeks ago, we had crab at his house. Same result. Two nights ago, we had tacos, he put four medium shrimp in my taco and by the time all four had time to hit my stomach, I was starting to feel a bit woozy. So, needless to say, I’m a bit paranoid of my favorite food. Is it possible to develop an allergy to something after a history of none?

Absolutely. My step-father ate seafood all the time and one day he got really sick after eating shrimp and hasn’t been able to eat in since. The allergic reaction just came out of no where after 35 years of eating seafood.

Sorry to tell you but there’s no cure at this point. Be sure to always let doctors know this. You’re probably also allergic to iodine, betadine, and medications that contain these. Read yor labels carefully.
