Question by Aubrielle’s mommy: Is it possible my baby has a cow’s milk allergy?
My daughter is 5 months. She has always been a VERY fussy baby. I love her, but sometimes i feel like i’m going crazy. She was exclusively breastfed until 2 weeks ago. She has her good days where she’s pretty content but then she has EXTERMELY fussy days where she just screams her head off. I recently put her on formula and she was doing really good for a few days then today she had one of her “screams her head off most of the day” days. She also has eczema that I have a hard time getting rid of. Anyways, my question is, could all of this fussiness and eczema be related to her having a cows milk allergy? I never cut dairy out of my diet…I never really thought to until i read an article right now about the allergy. and the formula she is on right now is Goodstart gentle which is made from cows milk. She isn’t fussy like this EVERYDAY so if she did in fact have a cows milk allergy would her fussiness be daily or would it come and go as hers does?
I’m just trying to find an answer as to why she has such bad days sometimes. It breaks my heart cuz i just don’t know what to do anymore.
thanks everyone

look for other signs like throwing up, unusual red “circle” like rash around her anus, and if shes breaking out anywhere but her face.
its possible she could just be adjusting to formula…i would call the doctor though just to be sure.

Question by Mrs. Beatty: Baby reflux, milk allergy, colic, or ?????
I am really trying to figure out what is wrong with her. It seems like she has reflux and then it seems like maybe it could be a milk allergy. So frustrating! The doctor swears its colic. I swear its not because she is just not THAT fussy. She is 3 months this week. She will be eating and then she gets fussy and falls off and then about a minute later blows up her diaper and then she is fine. Its always runny too. She has about six runny dirty diapers a day. She is ALWAYS gassy. Another thing she does is, I burp her and then some time within the hour she starts getting fussy then she spits up and it looks like cottage cheese. She is constantly rubbing her eyes while she eats and then just periodically throughout the day. She eats every 2-3 hours. I tried cutting out dairy and still do but I have never gone as far as cutting out all whey. I took her off of the reflux medicine because it seemed to make things worst. She was so fussy while taking that and I am not sure if it was because she was having a side effect to it or not. She has gained way enough weight. I just don’t know! Anyone know what I could do??? I am really needing some help here. Thanks.
She is breastfed =) I meant to mention that.

I would continue with the dairy elimination, cutting out whey and casein, and try eliminating soy too. That sounds like it could be a food sensitivity.
Good luck!

Question by Shan: If a baby has a possible milk allergy, can you still feed them formula w milk contents to supple breast milk?
My baby has a sensitive stomach and we are in the process of trying to see what works best for her. I put her on soy formula to supplement breast milk and it seems to have constipated her. I have heard that soy is not good for them and that the milk content in formulas is different that what they get from breast milk. Not even for sure she has milk allergy just trying to eliminate that if she is or is not. Now I cant give her soy formula. She seems ok on regular formula but I thought she might have a reaction and it is hard to know if it is breast milk or the formula causing symptoms. She is going to see a ped next week but just thought someone might have some advise.

If you drink milk, then there is also milk in your breast milk, so most likely not an allergy. The baby might just have acid reflux if she has a sensitive stomach. I would find out for sure what is wrong from the doctor before switching everything.

Question by mandys924: A milk allergy? Maybe the formula didn’t agree with my baby?
My baby will be 4 mo this wk, I’ve been breastfeeding him w/ an altered diet away from dairy and some other things. I would give him a bottle of Nutramigen if i had my husband watch him. He always seemed to have a digestive issue with drawing his legs up and a little gas even with my diet. But he is a lot better since this started when he was 3 wks. I asked a question in the past about if I should bottle feed, but everyone said it would only complicate things. So, I kept pressing on. 2 days ago I decided to ween him and put him on Nutramigen. Within 24 hours he had explosive diarrhea, a raw red ring around his butt, and i think a tint of blood in the stool, but i don’t know if that is from his butt. Well I am back to breastfeeding and prob will keep doing it for as long as possible. What does this sound like to anyone with a similar problem? I had him on Nutra. before for 24 hrs and it never did this. Should i take him to an allergist? nutra is for milk protein allergy babies?

If you are only giving your son breast milk or formula then it can only be one or the other. Maybe exclusively breastfeeding is the way to go if the formula has this effect on him. A trip to a paediatrician or Doctor might be in order then if they think an allergist is necessary to go them. Some kids just never have a formula that agrees with them.
