Question by Jay: Is there a test that detects milk or dairy allergy in babies?
if so, what is it called and how do they do it?
we are worried our 3 month old has a dairy or soy allergy.. my wife is breastfeeding.. weren’t sure if we should go out and buy all non-dairy foods or if there was a way to first determine whether that is what it is or not..
thanks in advance!

Yes there is a skin test that can be done by an allergist. I recommend that you see your pediatrician is you are concerned about a food allergy. Here is a link with lots of good information regarding food allergy. Please look it over. http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/food-sensitivity.html

There is no hard scientific proof that allergies are genetic. Of course, it is wise to assume that your child may be more inclined towards an allergy than others, but this is not an absolute. The newest recommendation is that children not ingest any peanut products until age 3. If he does happen to have a reaction take him to a PEDIATRIC ALLERGIST to determine level of sensitivity and if it is a ture allergy or simply an intolerance.

Question by stonewifey: Why are babies born with allergies?
My son is allergic to dairy and whole grains. Is it because I lacked eating something that I was supposed to when I was pregnant? The only person with allergies in my entire family is me and it’s to shellfish.

It’s genetic and can be completely random because of a mutation. It is possible that maybe if you didn’t eat a lot of grains or dairy, your son became susceptible to be allergic to it. I am allergic to pollen like my mom. But my younger siblings are not. I know my mom did not go outside a lot so maybe that could be why I have allergies every spring. I have gradually become more immune to it as I grew up. I’m not too sure about food allergies though. Allergies are annoying but even researchers don’t know too much about why it happens. Most likely it is genetic, but could be random. Allergies are caused because your body is overreacting towards something it thinks is harmful even if it is not. Best idea is to always read ingredients. I don’t think there is any cure for it.

Question by nyyankeesg1rl: Wondering about unborn babies allergies and what happens when they’re born?
When I was born I had a pretty bad milk allergy. Doctors did not detect this until I was two weeks old by which time I had a severe ear infection. One of my 3 sibs also had this allergy. It eventually went away when I was 5 years old. I’m wondering if unborn babies can have allergies and how likely is my baby to have an allergy because I did? If I tell the doctor/nurses can they test him when he’s born before giving him formula that has milk in it?
Thanks.
To whoever wrote about breastfeeding. My question was not about breastfeeding. I didn’t ask for your opinion

Why not tell your OBGYN who can make a note of it so that when your baby is born they do not give a milk based formula… just a thought.
