Question by Tyler & Kylee’s Mom: Question about babies with milk allergy/sensitivity?
My pediatrician said this is very common so I thought I’d seek advice from those that have been there. My baby is 11 weeks old and she’s always had mucousy stools. She’s also had a handful of diapers with some scant blood in them. She’s exclusively breastfed and weight gain’s been good, and she rarely acts as if she’s in abdominal discomfort.

My question is about how you figured out your baby had a milk allergy or sensitivity? The pediatrician said that 90% of the time that’s what is bothering the baby from the mother’s diet. I asked what to eliminate next if stools didn’t improve, and she said we’d probably put her on soy formula, which I don’t want. Also, when I go back to work I might have to supplement with some formula if I don’t get enough from pumping. Should I give her soy formula or milk-based? HELP!

Best answer:

Answer by JJ123
I didn’t breastfeed, but my daughter did have a milk allergy to the cow’s milk based formula. She had an awful rash on her bottom at only 4 days old. So her doc switched her to soy, which she did fine on for a few weeks. Then she developed terrible colic so her doc switched her to Enfamil Nutramigen which is specifically designed for babies with milk and/or soy allergies. It worked wonders for her and she was back to normal within days. She’s 10 months now and still on the Nutramigen because everytime we tried to switch her back to soy, she’d get sick again.

Question by sgalin40: Can I use whole milk instead of water to make my babies formula?
She will be 1 year old in March. She was a preemie (36 weeks) and has not been gaining weight well recently due to illness the last few months. I am looking for ways to get as many calories into her as possible. She is not a big eater and will only take about 15 ounces of formula a day plus solids. Any suggestions for weight gain would be great. Also she has food allergies and is allergic to eggs, oats and soy products.

Best answer:

Answer by sweethailo
i mixed 2% milk with my formula while i was transitioning from formula to milk, i cant see any harm in it.

I’m afraid because of his allergies he might react badly. I’m especially nervous of the MMR when that comes up.

Does anyone know if kids with food allergies are the ones who react badly to shots? The 2-3% that react? For people that had kids react, were they allergic to foods?

Best answer:

Answer by mamaac43
Just remind the dr. of what the baby is allergic to and they know if an alergy will flare.

Question by Mackenzie B: Should babies with food allergies be given vaccinations?
My 9 month old boy is allergic to milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts and bananas.

He is up to date on his polio, hib, and DTap.

However, I have not allowed him to have the Hep B, rotavirus, or Prevnar.

I don’t see the point of him having the Hep B. The “newness” of the Rotavirus scares me. The Prenvar fact sheet says if your child has severe allergies to ask your doctor. However, I’m on the 4th pediatrician and they blow me off when I ask them about why kids with severe allergies can’t have the Prevnar, so I keep refusing it and they keep getting mad at me.

The most recent pediatrician told me that since my son has severe allergies, if he did catch a disease, it would be harder for him to fight it, and that is why he needs vaccines more than other children. Is this crap or true?

To me, my son’s immune system is screwed up. It seems overloaded and adding more things might push him over the edge. (He had these allergies before he got his shots in case anyone wanted to know..I agonized over which ones to give him). He’s been ok with no reactions so far.

I’ve also been told that the MMR can now safely be given to kids with egg allergies. I know this is going to be a battle with our doctors when the time comes. Are there individual shots that don’t contain egg that he could be given? There has been a measles outbreak here in the area I live..12 people. All were unvaccinated, so I would really like my son to be vaccinated agains the measles.

Any thoughts? Are kids with food allergies more vulnerable to adverse reactions?? I agonize over this constantly!

Best answer:

Answer by beautifulbunny0286
this is really something to discuss with the doctor specifically. i think that if you chose to vaccinate which is probably in the best intrest of your child, i think you should go slowly. i would give 1 vaccination at a time. just with the risks of autism and all. its possible that giving 4 or 5 vaccinations at 1 time cause a huge assult on the babies immune system and cause problems like autism. when your child gets the vaccination you will stay at the doctors office for 20 minutes after to make sure there is no reaction. if you notice and reaction like swelling of the face/mouth or breathing problems call 911. good luck.

Best answer:

Answer by Liberty Belle
There is no hard scientific proof that allergies are genetic. Of course, it is wise to assume that your child may be more inclined towards an allergy than others, but this is not an absolute. The newest recommendation is that children not ingest any peanut products until age 3. If he does happen to have a reaction take him to a PEDIATRIC ALLERGIST to determine level of sensitivity and if it is a ture allergy or simply an intolerance.

My son is allergic to dairy and whole grains. Is it because I lacked eating something that I was supposed to when I was pregnant? The only person with allergies in my entire family is me and it’s to shellfish.

Best answer:

Answer by 2Pacalypse
It’s genetic and can be completely random because of a mutation. It is possible that maybe if you didn’t eat a lot of grains or dairy, your son became susceptible to be allergic to it. I am allergic to pollen like my mom. But my younger siblings are not. I know my mom did not go outside a lot so maybe that could be why I have allergies every spring. I have gradually become more immune to it as I grew up. I’m not too sure about food allergies though. Allergies are annoying but even researchers don’t know too much about why it happens. Most likely it is genetic, but could be random. Allergies are caused because your body is overreacting towards something it thinks is harmful even if it is not. Best idea is to always read ingredients. I don’t think there is any cure for it.

Question by nyyankeesg1rl: Wondering about unborn babies allergies and what happens when they’re born?
When I was born I had a pretty bad milk allergy. Doctors did not detect this until I was two weeks old by which time I had a severe ear infection. One of my 3 sibs also had this allergy. It eventually went away when I was 5 years old. I’m wondering if unborn babies can have allergies and how likely is my baby to have an allergy because I did? If I tell the doctor/nurses can they test him when he’s born before giving him formula that has milk in it?
Thanks.
To whoever wrote about breastfeeding. My question was not about breastfeeding. I didn’t ask for your opinion

Best answer:

Answer by white_crane68
Why not tell your OBGYN who can make a note of it so that when your baby is born they do not give a milk based formula… just a thought.
