Question by eric_aixelsyd: Why aren’t more restaurants aware of allergies?
Why don’t more places have separate cooking surfaces for things like shellfish, things that contain peanuts, peppers, and wheat products?

The government seems to try to protect the rights of lots of small groups, why not those of us with allergies?

Isn’t it a civil right to eat without worry in a public place?
I get saying it’s a civil right isn’t a good comparison, I did it to evoke a certain feel… I don’t think every place should bend over & help… but it would be nice.

I bet a place that didn’t serve any shellfish could do quite well… same for an anti-peanut establishment.

So many people have so many different allergies that in a cooking environment where you are preparing a variety of food for hundreds of people, it is virtually impossible to completely and utterly keep all possible allergens away from every single meal. There is only so much room and space in a restaurant kitchen, so just using different surfaces is not going to cut it. So although you are right that it would be nice, the government can hardly afford to enforce such a law, and it would be impractical. So I am afraid we allergy sufferers are simply out of luck.

My son for the moment is allergic to peanuts, milk and eggs. I need a VERY allergy aware and reputable daycare, be it a centre or home daycare.

The Department of Health warns against routine use of soy-based infant formulas because of the high content of phytoestrogens – compounds that mimic the action of the female hormone oestrogen. It is feared this could pose a risk to the long-term reproductive health of infants boys/girls i.e severe problems such as abnormal physical development, early puberty, conception, pregnancy, and cancers.
This has been known for several years though not wide public knowledge – infact some GPs still recommend soya as a suitable replacement for a child with milk allergy/intolerance!
Babies are usually allergic to both kinds of milk.
