Question by Tyler & Kylee’s Mom: Question about babies with milk allergy/sensitivity?
My pediatrician said this is very common so I thought I’d seek advice from those that have been there. My baby is 11 weeks old and she’s always had mucousy stools. She’s also had a handful of diapers with some scant blood in them. She’s exclusively breastfed and weight gain’s been good, and she rarely acts as if she’s in abdominal discomfort.
My question is about how you figured out your baby had a milk allergy or sensitivity? The pediatrician said that 90% of the time that’s what is bothering the baby from the mother’s diet. I asked what to eliminate next if stools didn’t improve, and she said we’d probably put her on soy formula, which I don’t want. Also, when I go back to work I might have to supplement with some formula if I don’t get enough from pumping. Should I give her soy formula or milk-based? HELP!

I didn’t breastfeed, but my daughter did have a milk allergy to the cow’s milk based formula. She had an awful rash on her bottom at only 4 days old. So her doc switched her to soy, which she did fine on for a few weeks. Then she developed terrible colic so her doc switched her to Enfamil Nutramigen which is specifically designed for babies with milk and/or soy allergies. It worked wonders for her and she was back to normal within days. She’s 10 months now and still on the Nutramigen because everytime we tried to switch her back to soy, she’d get sick again.

Question by Me, myself, & I: Anyone who knows about gluten allergies!!!! Please Help!!?
My 6 year old son has been hospitalized twice since birth because of the severe reaction he has to milk products. Both times we couldnt understand how he got so sick, because everyone knows not to give him milk products. (Thinking back over the past 6 yrs i dont recall an allergy test being done.)
I have recently noticed that he seems to get extreme bloating, diarrhea, and (last nite, vomiting) after eating wheat products, and i am thinking that maybe it is a gluten allergy not a milk allergy(or maybe both). I wonder if the two allergies are similar and if they are often mistaken for one another. If anyone knows anything about this topic, i’d love some insight. My baby is miserable, its killing me!

Question by katie: Confused about milk allergy/intolerance/aversion!?!?
My son is 11 months and every time he has any milk-based products, except cheese and yoghurt, he comes out in a red hives-like rash, mainly on his face and neck (where hes dribbled). My GP sent me to the pediatrician to get a special formula for him (still b/f fulltime, wanting to wean part time while im at work)but the ped doesnt think he has an allergy and the rash is a “skin contact allergy”. The ped was an a**hole and was in a rush so didnt explain anything to me thoroughly, even when I pressed for more info, he repeated what he’d said so I knew I wasnt getting anywhere. He told me I can go ahead and start my son on full cream milk!! He doesnt have any other symptoms like gastro or respiratory problems, but I am still hesitant as the rash looks very itchy and nasty…..
has anyone ever heard of “skin contact allergy” to milk and how do you manage it? And why doesnt he get it with cheese and yoghurt? But he had a sour cream & chive flavoured cracker and got a rash from that!
I waited 3 months for the damn appt with the pediatrician and now he’s closing his practice so I face an even longer wait to get into another pediatrician as all of his patients will go elsewhere….

My daughter had a similar issue. Milk is a very harsh food, and many babies have an intolerance to it, both by contact and digestion. The reason he probably doesn’t react to the cheese and yogurt is because it’s highly processed. I found a cool face cloth helped my daughter, because it closes the pores. You can try putting a cool face cloth on the spots where he normally spills milk. If you put a face cloth that has been dampened and rung out (very well) into the freezer it will be cool but not cold on his skin. It will also be absorbent to help catch any milk so it doesn’t linger on his skin. I hope this helps, and good luck with your parental journey!

My daughter is 14 months and also has a milk allergy. She is drinking Silk soy milk, Vanilla. She has seen a GI MD for this and also for reflux, they said as long as she is drinking a well balanced diet there is no need for anything else. She eats 3 meals a day and 2 snacks. All regular table foods, no baby foods. She is growing and gaining weight just fine.
If you want to add fat, I would first talk to your MD, she probably doesn’t need it.
Edit – I can totally understand. She doesn need those fats from meats. Have you tried the good old fashion, chicken nuggets, hot dogs and all that? Belle loves those.
