What Are The Symptoms of Shellfish Allergy?
Most individuals that suffer from a shellfish allergy will show symptom of it within a couple of hours of consuming it. They can be very mild or they can be life threatening for the individual. Paying attention to such symptoms though is what will help a person and their doctor to make an accurate diagnosis of what is wrong. Without doing so a person is open to more severe allergic reactions occurring later on.
On the mild end of things are hives that can occur all over the body. They are unusually found on the back or the arms. These hives may itch and burn due to the inflammation. They may be hot as well but if there is a fever too then you need to see a doctor. Sometimes the skin condition known as eczema can also be found. This will be a patch of dry and itchy skin that can also look scaly.
The face may be swollen and itchy around the lips. Swelling can also take place in many other places on the body. The tongue and the throat can also be swollen. For some people their entire lips will become huge which is a key indicator that they have this type of allergic reaction.
Symptoms that are very similar to asthma attacks are normal as well. This may not trigger an immediate concern for someone that is diagnosed with asthma though. However, for those that have never had such an episode it should let them know something really isn’t right. They may have a hard time breathing as well as suffer from wheezing and severe coughing.
Most people will tell you that they have gotten sick after eating shellfish. They assume that it simply doesn’t agree with their stomach. They may have abdominal pain that is very uncomfortable, vomiting, and even diarrhea that lasts for many hours. They don’t often realize though that they are allergic to shellfish so it may take a few times of this occurring before they realize there is a pressing issue.
There are people that feel out of the ordinary but they don’t have any physical symptoms. They may feel lightheaded or a bit nauseated and then it passes. Generally these individuals haven’t consumed very much of the shellfish though so they aren’t affected enough to realize that they may have an allergy to it.
In the most severe cases a person can die from the airways being cut off. This is known as Anaphylactic. They may feel that their throat is swelling up and then they are unable to draw in enough air. This is a life threatening emergency that requires immediate medical attention. A person can use consciousness as well as experience a rapid drop in blood pressure when this occurs.
