It is the proteins found in the shellfish that your body will have an adverse reaction to. The first time you come into contact with it your body may create a type of antibiotic to neutralize it. However, the next time it will recognize it as a problem again and take more aggressive action against it. The types of chemicals in the body that will be created are going to result in the symptoms that a person experiences when they have a shellfish allergy.
There has been research to show that if your family members are allergic to shellfish you may be as well. Therefore it would be a good idea to get tested by your doctor before you have to find out the hard way.
