Overview of Shellfish Allergy
Approximately 2% of people in the United States suffer from a shellfish allergy. This particular type of allergy affects many more adults than children. However, it is also believed that most children aren’t given shellfish which can explain that particular statistic. The term shellfish covers all types of seafood that comes in a shell. They include lobster, clams, crab, crayfish, and shrimp.
A person may only be allergic to certain types of shellfish or all of them. This means you may eat lobster for years without any problem. Then one day you decide to try some clams and you become ill. Your doctor can help you to determine which types of shellfish that you need to steer clear of in order to be as healthy as possible. They will conduct tests on both the blood and the skin to figure out what your needs are.
The symptoms of shellfish allergy can be many different things. It will depend on how much shellfish was consumed. It also depends on how hard the body is willing to fight it. In many cases it also will depend on what type of shellfish was consumed. A person can have a rash or hives that last for a couple of days. They may have an upset stomach, diarrhea, or nausea. Problems with breathing that resemble asthma, and the airways being swollen have all been recorded.
Depending on the severity of the reaction, there are quite a few treatment options. For mild allergies letting them run the course of time or administering over the counter products can help. Those types of products will help to relieve the pain and itching. They can also get the swelling to recede faster. Consuming products that will keep you dehydrated is also very important.
For those with a more severe reaction to shellfish allergy, they may need to take prescription medication. Having it on hand as a life protecting measure may be necessary in case shellfish is accidentally consumed in some form. The best course of action to take if your doctor says you have a shellfish allergy is to stay away from the foods that can trigger it. Luckily, this shouldn’t be too hard to do unless you have a real passion for consuming shellfish.
Having a shellfish allergy doesn’t have to stop you from enjoying delicious foods though. You may be able to consume fish without any problems. You do need to be careful to read labels though. Sometimes of foods as well as supplements are made from shellfish. If you are allergic to it you shouldn’t handle it either. You may have a reaction if you are preparing it for someone else. Don’t take the risk with your own health.
