Overview of Milk Allergy
Milk is a type of drink that is very good for ensuring we have strong bones and teeth. Yet for some people milk creates havoc for their bodies as they have an allergy to it. The cause of such allergy problems is due to the proteins in the milk. Sometimes a person is only allergic to certain types of milk though. For example they can’t have milk from cows but they can consume soy milk. Most individuals that have a milk allergy can’t consume goat’s milk either as the proteins are too similar to those you get from cow’s milk.
The biggest population of people affected by milk allergy are infants and young children. It is believed that their body hasn’t developed properly yet to be able to accept the proteins in the milk. It isn’t uncommon though for these young children to outgrow a milk allergy as they get older. Some experts believe that the high number of immunizations that are now required for children at a young age alters their immune system. They fear that is what is trigging the continued increase in milk allergy for children.
There are children that never do outgrow this allergy though. They have to deal with it their entire life. Some adults have drunk milk without incident and then suddenly develop an allergy to it. Since the onset of symptoms is usually rapid it is easy enough to determine the cause of this type of allergy. Some people have a mild reaction such as breaking out or becoming sick with symptoms similar to the flu. Other people have respiratory related symptoms and only a very small number of them end up in a lift threatening situation because of it.
Prevention of consuming milk products is the best way to deal with such an allergy. However, there are so many products out there containing them that mistakes can be made. Over the counter products can help offer relief for itching and to reduce swelling. There are also prescription medications that those with a severe milk reaction need to carry with them at all times as a precaution.
For those that do have milk allergy, it is important to find alternative sources of calcium and Vitamin D. Taking a supplement can be the best way to make sure you get what you need. Talk to your doctor to see what other alternatives may be right for you. There are also types of juice, cereal, and rice that you can consume to get high amounts of calcium. You may need to be more creative with your meal planning to make sure you can eat well and still avoid milk products.
