Question by Telepharmavangelism: I’m just developing allergies left and right– help?!?
So I was born with a peanut allergy, which is no big deal after having it your whole life. However, in the past 6 months, my amount of allergies have SKYROCKETED, and I’m finding new ones each day. I’m vegetarian and have been for a couple of years now, because I can’t digest meat and it causes problems for me (that, and, animal rights own everything else).

So you would think I could eat soy, right? Milk, perhaps?

Well, I used to. I’ve been lactose intolerant since I was young but milk never posed TOO much a problem, but alas my parents had me drink soy milk.

unfortunately, one of my allergies developed is soy. My question is how do you develop an allergy to something you’ve had your whole life? And my allergies don’t stop there: I have oral allergy syndrome, and I’m allergic to grass and trees, so therefore my tendency to be allergic to fruits and vegetables is quite high.. and I’ve discovered a banana, pineapple, pea, apple, and corn allergy with that.

So what can I do? Do I just have to suffer along with this? I went to an allergist, and the tests confirmed all these allergies and more– plus all pine nuts and such. No one has any answers as to WHY these allergies may be developing.

I feel like a small little tadpole in an ocean. Help?
He told me to continue using Zyrtec once a day (for seasonal allergies) to see if it’d do anything, but it hasn’t. Unfortunately, skim milk induces the worst acid reflux for me. If it’s not one problem, it’s another.

First of all, drink skim milk. It contains no soy or lactose.
Did the allergist give you any prescriptions that could help?

Question by Shamrock: do i need an epi pen?
I have been getting allergy shots for a few years now for you usual, grass, pollen, weeds, trees, dust. My allergies were found 4 years ago when I got my tonsils taken out. I recently quit smoking (mostly) and started seeing an allergist (was seeing ENT before). She is now telling me I am severely allergic to my dogs & grass to the point I need an Epi Pen and that I have asthma. She also told me I was allergic to milk which after the blood-work came back was incorrect, so I am not sure if I believe her on the rest of the stuff. I have had my dogs for 12 years and had cats for 15, and have played field sports, been a mountain hiker, outdoorsy person & gardener my whole life so how could I all of a sudden (with no real side effects such as Anaphylaxis ) develop such serious allergies? My grass/pollen stuff was just itchy skin, watery eyes, & sneezing more annoyance prevention with my shots than anything.

I get winded only when playing field sports but can catch my breath and get back out there and keep going. I always blamed that on being a smoker for 12 years, but the allergist is insisting otherwise. She gave me an inhaler (afraid to use it, don’t want my lungs to be dependent) and an epi pen – for my grass allergy. I play on grass, I roll around in it, I dig it up and no reaction. Was this new Dr being nuts or what?

PS. I would have already gone for a second opinion but my insurance sucks and it is gonna cost me a pretty penny to walk into a Dr. office.

I have been suffering with allergies for over 13 years and am allergic to both dogs and cats. I have had many dogs and a cat for 14 years. If you are not getting a reaction to the animals you have, it probably wont bother you. The longer you have the animals, the more immunity your body will build to them. The doctor is right, you should always carry an epi-pen with you if you have a lot of allergies. You should also always keep an antihistamine with you such as benadryl, putting two tablets under your tongue can have the same effect if an allergic reaction occurs. She is wrong about the smoking, it can make allergies much worse and does cause asthma. I have asthma as well, but don’t get symptoms unless I’m sick or have an allergic reaction to something. I only use an inhaler when I need it, using it all the time would be unnecessary. Iv’e had three different allergist in my life and they all tell me different things. The best thing to do is a lot of research on what allergies are and find out what works for you. The library and internet have been my friend for many years. Shots do help in the long run, but are super annoying. Hope this helps.
PS- I’m allergic to grass too and get no reaction from it : )

When someone has such severe allergies the cause is usually more complicated than just treating the symptoms. I suggest you (and your parents) go to the following website and learn about hidden allergies……
