Question by Lark 25: I need some Allergy help?
I just went to the Allergist on Tuesday for some skin testing, and found out I am allergic to:
Wheat/Flour
Eggs
Shellfish
Macademia Nuts
Almonds
Coconut
Shea Nut
White Petroleum
I have been sick for a while, so even though I found out all of this and can hardly eat anything anymore I am glad to know. It’s been almost 3 days of me cutting out all of these and I feel A LOT better.
Anyways, I am having a hard time finding hand lotions without Coconut oil or Palm oil or Shea nut or Petroleum. Does anybody know of anything good that doesn’t have these in them??
Also, Cocoa Butter – I googled cocoa butter and it says that cocoa butter comes from cocao beans but why is it always related to coconut?? Even cocoa butter lotion has a huge coconut of the front of the bottle? Also – chocolate bars are made with cocoa butter – does that mean I can’t eat them either because it seems cocoa butter is always related to coconuts? Someone please help me?! :)

The symbol you think is a coconut is actually a cocoa bean – it’s what
chocolate comes from…So it’s not related to coconuts.

If I were you, I would go to etsy.com (just because I’ve been on there alot) and look in the makeup section — there’s loads of natural, homemade lotions and cosmetics that are geared toward people who have sensitivities…Many of the sellers will make one just for your needs, also. And, really, they aren’t very expensive.
It’s definitely worth a look.

Question by M G M: Food allergy – should family be supportive or…?
I found out a few yrs ago I’m allergic to shellfish. I love shrimp and lobster, so was disappointed. No more buying for holidays, or whatever meal I want. Doesn’t bother me in a restaurant. My father insists that he buy it around the holidays – he said other people like it, so they should be able to have it. I’m an adult, who visits here and there. It bothers me that he doesn’t care when I’m going to be there, and that my mother supports him. I get a little anxious, because if they are eating the shrimp, one I am sad, and two, if they aren’t washing their hands, I am nervous about what else to eat. I would hate to have to inject myself with an epi at a home meal. Should I just avoid being at their house, or suck it up and just try to ignore? I’m at their house this weekend, and my aunt and cousins are coming over for belated Holiday – my Dad told her-bring shrimp cocktail.

How would you feel? How would you deal with it? I’ve told my father – it is inconsiderate -disagree
All good answers so far. The reason I’m sad is that for a long time, I had shrimp at home or out and seemed to have no problem – Loved it! I don’t know how I acquired allergy – but I have it. I lived with my parents for a short while as I transitioned to graduate school nearby, so I come to their house, help with the cleaning, laundry, and throwing junk out on occasion weekends. I guess all of that made me extra sensitive as my Dad first went to get shrimp when I lived there at Christmas time – no other siblings made the trip – so it was for 3 people ( mom, myself,)
I do not object when going to various parties where shrimp is served, but I can easily steer clear of the shrimp, and avoid eating other foods until I go somewhere else.

It’s very difficult I am sure to watch others enjoy something that you can no longer have, however, as you say, you are the visitor, not the host.

If your parents are hosting an event then they have the right to decide the menu. You are aware of your allergies. Can you perhaps bring something along with you that you too can enjoy without incident or drawing attention?

It would be nice if there were something else available for you but costs being what they are nowadays with gas prices and food costs being what they are, it isn’t always an option.

The holiday is about getting together, not your allergy.

Make the best of it, Kid!

Question by cookie lady: Food allergy and alcohol?
I am allergic to shrimp, therefore I assume I am allergic to crab/lobster/scallops, etc. as well. I was not always allergic to shrimp, and I LOVE to eat shrimp (and other shellfish) but about 15 years ago I began having reactions. I still ate it, but only occasionally. About 6 years later I had a really bad reaction to some bay shrimp and had to leave the restaurant I was at to get to the emergency room because my tongue was swelling down into my throat. So, I decided to not eat any shellfish again, sadly.

Well, I was drinking one night with my boyfriend, and we went to Red Lobster (where my bro worked) and I decided to be brave/stupid and eat some crab that my boyfriend had ordered. It didn’t cause a reaction, so about two weeks later I ate shellfish again, shrimp this time, but I made sure that before I ate it I had already had a glass of wine, and I kept drinking while I was eating the shrimp, which somehow prevented a reaction.

So, my question is this: does alcohol consumption have something to do with this non-allergic reaction? I should note that years later, when I was in Culinary school, I had prepared a shrimp dish in class, and decided to take a very small bite, and I had a reaction within minutes.

My second question is what is it in shrimp that causes the allergic reaction? Somebody told me it was iodine, but I don’t know that to be true. I also heard that it’s because the shrimp’s diet consists of all the crap (basically) floating in the water, and that causes the reaction.

So, what is it?

First of all you can not be allergic to anything that you have not been exposed to before
people who are born with allergies have been exposed in their mothers womb

with allergies each time you go into an allergic reaction it will be worse and worse.
shellfish allergy is nothing to fool around with it can be life threatening.

yes it is possible to be allergic to shrimp and not crab.
you may develop an allergy to crab at a latter date.

it is also possible not to be allergic to all verities shrimp

for most people it is an oil that is in the meat of shrimp.
the make up of that oil can change depending on verity of the shrimp and location where it was raised.

if you are getting mouth swelling you should carry a EPI PEN

you really should stay away from all shell fish
the alcohol had nothing to do with you not going into a reaction

in fact if you eat the same verity of shrimp that gave you trouble before
and drink alcohol you can speed up your reaction. alcohol can also react with the med’s that they have to give you to get you out of the reaction

There might be another reason that you did not go into a reaction.
it is basically a histamine reaction in your body
certain foods and medicines can stop it before it starts
