Question by Katie X: What causes welts/hives where milk-based products touch baby’s face?
My breastfed son is just barely 9 months old and I’ve started trying dairy with him. Per a suggestion (out of a couple baby books) I spread a little bit of cream cheese on a rice rusk for him to eat. He smushed it around his face, of course, and everywhere the cream cheese touched welts and hives raised.

Then, I ran out of stored breastmilk, and my mum/babysitter called me at work to say everywhere his milk-based formula dribbled on his face angry red welts were developing (he’s usually on soy-based formula).

They start to fade rapidly and are gone within 40 mins. He doesn’t seem to be in discomfort of any kind.

It is obvious this is caused by topical contact with cow’s milk-based products, and I’m worried this means he has milk allergies. But he doesn’t seem to be gassy or uncomfortable after eating them- just his skin has that reaction.

Do you have any thoughts on this? Any similar experiences?

Best answer:

Answer by Jaiden Eats At Mommy’s
That is weird. I know when my daughter nurses her cheek that lays against my breast will get red bumples and a rash-look. I attribute it to heat rash and it does go away not long after nursing is done.

Definitely bring this up to the pediatrician. They may suggest holding off any milk-based products until he is older and then suggest trying it again to see his reaction. The good thing is he doesn’t NEED it yet so go ahead and discontinue its use until further medical advice is given.

Good luck

Question by Amie: is this a true food allergy????????
My 9 year old step daughter was diagnosed with food allergies when she was almost 7. she was quite the chubby little thing and now is quite slender. her mother said that she is allergic to wheat and milk, and chocolate. well I know that before the diagnosis she never complained about stuff that she ate. and I also know that when you get tested many of times it is false positave. some weekends when she is here she will eat stuff she is not supposeto and no reaction then other times when she almost is in need from attention from mommy she says my tummy hurts. I think that she complains about illness to get moms attention. and she is quite the hypochondriac with other things too. but this food allergy thing is making me crazy she cant have it if it is good for her but if she wants a peice of cake or a cookie or candy bar then she eats it no problem. she never has visible symptoms well her mom says she gets white milk dots on her nose (never seen by us), and her tummy hurts. helpplz

Best answer:

Answer by onlymatch4u
First of all, the only thing that causes allergies must contain a protein. If it does not have a protein, the problem can be a food sensitivity.

There is a simple test that you can do to determine if she has an allergy or a food sensitivity to something. Have her sit in a chair and wait until her heart rate is constant, about 5 minutes. Then take her pulse for a full 60 seconds. Don’t do the 15 sec. multiply by 4 thing, a full 60 seconds. Write down the number. Now have her chew the thing you believe she is allergic or sensitive too for about 30 seconds. Keep it in her mouth and then take her pulse again for the full 60 seconds. Write that number down.

If there is an increase in the pulse over 6 beats, she has an allergy (if protein based) or a food sensitivity. I suggest the milk you are feeding her may be pasteurized and homogenized. That is garbage and it’s no wonder she may have a reaction to that junk. What you want to give her is RAW milk that is from cows fed grass, not some grain fed, sick cow they make the pasteurized garbage from. Most likely she is not allergic, but the altered calcium – chards of crushed amino acids that elicit a homocystein response in the body could be the real problem she has with milk.

Go to: www.organicpastures.com and look at the FAQ’s for more information on the high quality raw milk they sell.

good luck to you

Question by : Could I have a food allergy?
I’ve had chronic headache(s) for 4 years. Last year, I went to a chiropractor for a while. She thought I may have food allergies. So, I got my blood tested, and it turned out I was allergic to: corn, tomatoes, dairy, soy, wheat, oranges, and peanuts. So I went a few months without eating these, but nothing happened. So, I gave up on that. Now, I don’t know if I was supposed to fast or not before the test, because she didn’t tell me, but I didn’t. Could that have affected the results? Also, we told my doctor about the allergy test, and her reaction was (I’m paraphrasing here) “no, that’s stupid.” But could I have one? Did I just not give it long enough for the foods to leave my body and stuff?

Best answer:

Answer by S Harris
I have never known the doctor to test blood for allergic reactions. I though it was just skin. That’s what I got tested. Do you know if you have bad sinuses? If so you may have chronic sinus infections. Also, see if you are allergic to pollen.

Question by flourpower: Could my little girl have a milk allergy?
My daughter is 5 months old now. She is bottle fed, and we have had her on just regular dairy based formula. Since she was about a month old she has always spit up quit a bit after every bottle. We talked to her ped. about it and she suggested that “we feed her too much at one time” so we cut back and it didn’t change anything. When I asked the ped. again she said the same thing. (Ugh.) So I started to think perhaps it was reflux. I switched her over to Enfamil AR, which has rice starch in it so it is thicker, supposed to help with spitting up. It seemed to help for maybe a day or two but the spitting up seems to be back to normal now. I am wondering if she might have a milk protein intollerance? She recently has been having lots of small diarrhea like bowel movements, usually when she is eating, her stool is mucusy, she seems to be in pain when she is eating (arching her back, kicking out her legs, crying, pulling bottle out of her mouth), and just today I noticed a small rash on her arm. I am wondering if these sound like a milk protein allergy to anybody, or if anybody has expirienced similar symptoms? I know I should cal her ped. and ask her but everytime I bring up a concern she just says the same thing, that I am feeding her too much too often or that I don’t burp her enough, etc. Any suggestions/ideas/input is very helpful! Thank you!!

Best answer:

Answer by AnniesMama
My girl has a milk allergy and didn’t have any spitting up or rashes but was absolutely miserable, screaming all day and she did pull away, arch her back and have bloody/mucousy stools. The pulling/arching could have been anything related to discomfort, but the bloody diapers sealed the deal that it was an allergy. We switched her to Alimentum and she was a new baby in a few days.

Question by cj84: Has anyone heard of this related to an allergy?
My 9 month old daughter has recently tried toast (whole wheat) but for the past few weeks here voice has has seemed crackly. Personally I think it’s because she does these very high pitched squeals and screams when she gets excited, my MIL is convinced it’s an allergy, even though my daughter is extremely happy and acting normal and has no signs of an allergy (watery eyes, runny nose, rash, irritability, being sick) I do have a check up May 25 (earliest I can get in) I really don’t think I have anything to worry about, but she (is staying with us for a week) is so convinced something is wrong with her and telling me to stop any foods, except for beginner purees, it’s kind of driving me crazy that she thinks I don’t know my daughter well enough to know when something is wrong. Has anyone heard of a baby having a slightly crackling voice as an allergy reaction? I haven’t read it anywhere
The thing is she had this crackling since about a week before the bread, I have only given to her 3 times total and have stopped for time being, and her voice is still kind of crackling..I didn’t mean to sound super annoyed in this, I just hate when someone is constantly telling me how to raise my child and always pointing out everything they think I am doing wrong..Thank you for the responses

i’m 18 and female. i recently started going to a natural medicine doctor and had an ALCAT food allergy panel. most of what i’m allergic to are things i eat almost everyday. i don’t have reactions, like hives, to anything. so far all i’ve noticed is that when i have dairy, my stomach hurts. apparently, i am also allergic to the following….

severely – pecans; moderately – yeast, cashews, cauliflower, cow’s milk, grapes, green peas, green peppers, millet, mustard, pineapple, salmon, shrimp, snapper, sole, summer squash, tuna, gluten, wheat, oats, rye and barley!

these are things i (used to) eat a lot that i’m going to add into my 4 day rotation: beef, potatoes, turkey, corn, broccoli, and rice. and by the way, i’m from kansas, so i was raised on beef and potatoes and am very sad i can’t eat them anymore!

SO now my doctor said i cannot have any type of dairy, grain or sugar. does anyone have any recipes or advice to make eating this way easier? i am so frustrated.
please don’t insult me. i do not go to a “witch doctor”. i go to a respected doctor who is well known for helping austistic children. i never even said i was allergic to sugar! this is in addition to everything else. i also have a thyroid problem, so in conjuction with that, the foods i eat make me very tired and irratible. my dad has been having the same problems for years. this doctor is an answer to my prayers.

Answer by bekahbabe001
Maybe you should get a second opinion… If you only notice pain/irritation from eating dairy, perhaps you’re only allergic to that? Its just a suggestion, but if I were you I would get a second opinion before giving up all those foods!

Anyway, you can have soy milk in place of cow’s milk, and there are tons of great tasting vegetarian and vegan cheeses/yogurts/ice cream out there that you can have in place of dairy.

Question by Alisha: trying to figure out my dogs allergy?
I have a min.dachshund. He’s a “party color” (solid black). The softest fur EVER (akin to that of a bunny). However, he seems to have developed a bit of an allergy. He was getting ear infections often, and beginning to lick/chew his paws. My vet suggested changing his food up. I have. He eats blue buffalo basics, turkey and sweet potato. No corn, soy, wheat, flour, grain (etc) or chicken. Apparently the biscuits suck (at least he thinks so). She also gave me something like a benadryl (but weaker) because the ben made him pee like, everywhere and be drowsy.
He’s a very BALL oriented dog, so during his waking hours he doesn’t really scratch himself, or anything, just runs around and plays ball. It’s at night, maybe the hour before he falls asleep that the itch seems to bother him. His skin doesn’t appear to be red anywhere (sometimes the underneaths of his ears, but that seems to be after he runs around outside in the HEAT). but his fur is falling out on his chest/underbelly (and, on a black dog with white skin this is pretty bad).
it doesn’t seem to matter how long he’s been outside, it’s been rainy the past few days and he still seems pretty darn itchy at night. I’m open to any suggestions. Just not “take him to the vet and get him allergy tested”. Mostly because the vet around here (specialist) is 600$/initial visit, 2000$ for the allergy test. And that is a chunkload.
My regular vet is VERY reasonable, just the specialist is not. He’s supposed to be on 2 doses daily (12 hours apart I’d imagine). She (the vet) checks his ears, and has never said anything about mites. He usually has a yeast infection, and is treated with drops for 7-10days. he is also on K9 ADVANTIX (to prevent fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and biting flies).
*I called it Party- color, not to mean he is partially colored, but that it was a new-fad color. I guess that’s just my way of describing it. And I think technically, as solid black is odd for a dachshund (who are usually black and tan) he might be partially colored?
The main problem I’m having is he never seems itchy until bed time. And only then if he didn’t bring his ball to bed. It’s like OCD. he doesn’t notice he’s itchy until he’s too tired to play ball. So, there isnt much of a degree of itchyness.

Answer by openheartgiants
Hi,
It could be allergies or it could be mites (demodectic or sarcoptic mange) either will cause his hair to fall out. Are his ears crusty at all? That’s a sign. If all else fails and you think it’s an allergy, the raw food diet usually works. See if there is an ASPCA in your area. The vet care there is reasonable. Good Luck
