I have a peanut allergy, and sometimes it seems like my parents don’t think its a very big deal. We still have food with peanuts in the house and it makes me very uncomfortable. I don’t even feel safe at home. What should I do?
I’m very allergic.
i think it might also be because i’ve never had a reaction (i’m very careful), so they don’t think it will happen.

how allergic are you/ just tell them flat out that it makes you uncomfortable because you are allergic.

Did you get a medical diagnosis about your peanut allergy? You need to hightlight to your parents about the danger of peanut allergy. In extreme case, it can cause anaphlyaxis. You can get information on the type of allergies, diagnosis and symptoms at http://gored.eu/Food-Allergies.html

I don’t think there is any easy answer to this since I don’t know all of the family circumstances. I will tell you that in other cases doctors will recommend that non-allergic siblings have peanut products twice a week, I guess to build/maintain immunity.

On the other hand, how scary! It’s like having a loaded gun in the house. You should discuss your concerns with your parents, and tell them that you’d rather not take a chance that you’ll need to take a trip to the emergency room. Hopefully you can come to some kind of understanding or compromise that you are all comfortable with. If they must keep it in the house perhaps a separate cutting board on which to prepare anything with peanuts. Prep utensils and contaminated dishes should be thoroughly washed immediately.
