do babies with cow’s milk allergies grow out of it usually?
Posted by: Alan in Milk Allergies, tags: Allergies, Babies, Cow's, grow, Milk, usually
My 5 month old has a cow’s milk allergy. she throw up violently if her formula has cow’s milk in it. She’s on nutramigen right now.
Will she be like this for life? or do they usually grow out of it and can drink milk eventually?

If I remember correctly, most of the time they will grow out of it.
Not to scare you, but not all allergic reactions can be so physical. Just a quick ‘for instance’, my niece was on formula until about 10 months or so – then my brother and sister in law switched her to milk at around a year old. As most one year olds do, she had been making baby words, walking, eye contact, pointing and screaming when she wanted something. However, subtly, after the change to milk her eye contact waned and she began to show signs of early autism (no speech by 2 years old, no eye contact, etc) Now, at nearly 3 she has been off milk (and wheat) for just about six months and is doing wonderfully! All she is doing now is playing catch up to other 3 year olds – but she responds better, makes eye contact – what a surprise it was to all of us that she was allergic to milk in such a way.

They say yes that more than half of babies grow out of it. According to my allergist that depends upon the severity of it. You probably haven’t seen an allergist yet because she’s only 5 months but definitely go see one. There’s other symptoms other than violent throw up. Is there blood in her stools? Does she vomit blood? Because if her only symptom is projectile vomiting, maybe just formula didn’t agree with her or she has reflux because GERD babies sometimes need that formula. I have a friend whose baby didn’t have GERD but would projectile vomit on any milk based formula. Come one year, they did a test at the allergist and she was not allergic to milk proteins and she went on whole milk just fine. There is a small percentage of babies that just can’t do formula in the first place.
Other factors that go into it is how severe the allergy is and whether or not they have other allergies. For instance, my son is allergic to cow’s milk protein casein on a level 3 from the blood “rast” test. He can have milk if its baked into things, but in moderation…not a lot. They have hopes of him growing out of it because of the level of it. However, going against him- he is deathly allergic to eggs and the severity of that and the fact that he has another allergy that bad is going against him. They don’t have hopes of him growing out of the eggs because of how bad it is.
I definitely would suggest going to an allergist just to confirm. Also, I would be suspicious of giving eggs too just because my allergist told me that they go hand in hand sometimes…he actually was surprised that my son wasn’t allergic to peanuts and soy as well because of his milk & egg allergy.
