How Do I Ensure My Toddler Is Getting Enough Calcium?
Posted by: Alan in Milk Allergies, tags: Calcium, Enough, Ensure, Getting, Toddler
My 18 month old son has a severe milk allergy. If he ingests milk, milk by-products or any processed foods containing milk he is covered from head to toe in hives. I’m wondering if anyone (possibly in the same situation) has some suggestions on ensuring he gets the calcium he needs.

Have you considered Goat Milk? It’s much less likely to cause allergies and is very healthy.
Otherwise, consider supplements added to his food. Calcium can be found in other foods that a not dairy based.

I do not have children with this problem, but one of my daughters is not extremely fond of milk, but will drink it. But I would get products that are calcium fortified like cereals, orange juice, Sunny D, soy milk, oatmeal, and I am sure there are plenty more! And also get foods that are rich in calcium already like broccoli, spinach, almonds, peas, beans (baked and white), rhubarb, salmon, tofu. I know it is hard to get kids to eat some of those, but try and you can also puree broccoli into sauces and stuff without them knowing! You could also try a calcium supplement, I would ask your pediatrician about that first though!

I would first talk to the doctor and see what he/she says about giving your son liquid calcium, because as I’m sure you’re probably aware, Children require a different dosage per day then Adults do. They have specific liquid vitamins for breast fed babies so maybe ask the doctor about those and see if it would be ok to give him that.
