My Baby Girl Has Stomach Cramps Just In The Wee Hours Of Morning? Allergy To Cow’s Milk Or Needs More Burping?

Hi, I’m breastfeeding our 3.5-month-old girl & I feed her about every 2.5 hours. At night, I feed her upon waking. But, after about the 4a or 5a or 6a feeding (depending on when the last feeding was), she twists and turns and pulls up her legs. I know it’s stomach cramps. And they seem to last until about 8a or 9a or 10a, and then she’s fine for the rest of the day. And yes, they do seem to abate when I feed her, but they certainly disrupt her sleep. To clarify, she is NOT screaming or crying when she has these cramps (she doesn’t have colic), just grunting and groaning. I can usually let her lay there & work it out for awhile, but she will work up to A scream, then I pick her up & try to burp & feed her. After that, if I lay her down, the cramps start up again. I have eliminated much from my diet, but not cow’s milk yet, should I try Soy milk? Or, could it be that I just have to be sure she burps when I feed her at night. … I’m a new mom. … Anyone else experience this?

My daughter did the same thing. My doctor said to make sure that I burped her really well and not to lay her down right away. He said to let her sit up for a while to make sure all the gas is out or just hold her over my shoulder and rub her back until she falls back to sleep.
But don’t believe all you read and are told about what you eat and drink and how it affects the baby. They only things that affect the baby is things like medications, booze, drugs….. and they also say caffine, but I drank pop when I was pregnant and all of after and my daughter never had any problems.

Try Soy milk or powdered milk, it may help.
Always burp her before letting her go to sleep, if she lies on her back while she sleeps, she can throw up and inhale some of it.
It can cause obvious problems and at the least, cause a lung infection which can turn into aspiration pneumonia.

I just wanted to throw in the experience we had with our baby girl, who is now a happy healthy 6 month old. About a week after we brought her home, she started having screaming and thrashing fits that lasted 5mins to an hour. Her doctor wasn’t concerned but changed her formula. Two weeks in, the fits returned and continued til she was 3 months old. Still, he had no concern and said to stick with it, she was learning to use her digestive track. It was grueling to have to hold my baby daily while she worked through these agonizing spells. We even ignored the doctor and got some Soy formula, but the spells continued. Finally, we switched to a different doctor who suggested yet another formula designed for babies with a cow’s milk protein allergy. It was very pricey and worried us if we could afford it,would it work, etc. I am so glad we got that other doctor and he prescribed this formula back in October. She hasn’t had a spell since. The doctor listed the problem as reflux (our baby has spit up maybe twice in her six months so it sounds wrong to me) but I don’t argue with the results,it helped 110%. I think sometimes these doctors have know idea what the problem is, they take a stab at what it could be and occasionally come up with a winner.
