If Your Baby Had An Allergy To Cow’s Milk Protein, I Have A Question For You?

Did you breastfeed and make all of the necessary eliminations from your diet or did you use formula? How long (how old was the baby) was it before he/she outgrew the allergy? I’ve been breastfeeding for 5 months, he has a CMP allergy. I just weaned him and now regret it, wondering if there was something else I could have done, I had already for the past 3 months eliminated from my diet anything w/ CMP in it …but it seems like he became sensitive to everything I eat, that’s why I did it. He was in pain and is much better since we switched to formula. Anyway, I’m thinking maybe I could have done something different. I miss nursing him, eventhough it has only been about 4 days since I stopped. I hate doing the formula thing…I find it a real pain in the a**, and I know that breastmiulk is better. what to do?

Please don’t beat yourself up about stopping breastfeeding…your son was in pain and you did what you needed to do to stop that. Alot of children do eventually outgrow the allergy, so in a year or so it may not even be a problem. You may not have been able to breastfeed as long as you wanted, but 5 months is alot more of a headstart than alot of other babies get. Take comfort in teh fact that your child is no longer in pain and you gave him a great nutritional start.

Both of my sons where allergic to cow’s milk and soy and I am one of those women who never produced enough breast milk to fill my child up. I used goats milk which they had no problem with. Now that they are older(8 and 12) they still can not tolerate whole cows milk but can eat cheese or yogurt in small amounts. It depends on the child as to how long and if an allergy is outgrown. At 5 months he will still get most of his calories from his formula but you can also talk to your doctor about starting solids

sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you can’t breastfeed. Your baby needs to eat, and to not feel sick all the time. Thats when formula is a blessing. Don’t feel guilty, you did all you could!! Your baby will thrive on formula as well, and feel reassured that the 5 months of breastmilk you could give him did wonders for his developing mind and body!!

I never breastfed, but my daughter was showing signs of cow’s milk protein allergy…both on regular and soy formula. She was on Similac Alimentum for almost 9 months. At 10.5 months, we had her allergy tested (for other things besides the CMP allergy) and it showed up clean. We started her back on regular Similac and she is doing fine. She also eats cheese and yogurt with no problems. She will be starting whole milk in the next few weeks so we will see how that goes.
The allergist I went to said that all kids are different, but most tend to outgrow the allergy by 2 years of age.

This is just the first of many “what if” kind of questions you’ll ask yourself. You did the right thing for your son when you breastfed him. You are doing the right thing for him now that he’s on formula. Only the good parents worry like this, cut yourself a break. You are a good mother.

Sometimes you just cant breastfeed, my daughter in now 10 months and I went through the same problems maybe worse she has blood in her stool til about 6 months, she was on Neocate for a bit to help her, every try that for your baby? or Nutramigen? Breast milk is better for babies, but not all babies are the same and can not handle it. Stay away from trying to best feed, it is a pain in the A$$ for the formula you will have a happier baby in the end. Ever take your baby to see a Pediatric G.I they are also very helpful with his better than your Peditrican
