Reflux And Milk Protein Allergies?
Posted by: Alan in Milk Allergies, tags: Allergies, Milk, Protein, Reflux
My daughter has been diagnosed with both since she was about 4 weeks old.
I have been reading a lot about it lately as we have had to put her back on reflux medicine again. She was off for 4 months.
I have read that they almost go hand in hand, that if the baby has a milk allergy, then most likely they will have reflux.
Do your babies have one or both? Read anything like this? Thoughts?

My son had reflux but did not have Milk protein allergy. My friends baby has both. My cousin just had reflux. Yes I have heard that they usually go hand in hand together. Alex was on Zantac twice a day with Mylanta for his bad days. I thought he would never out grow it because I was told around 6 months most babies too. Well needless so say he is now 9 months old and is medication free and cereal in bottles free.

The message boards were amazing. If you have any questions ask some of the mommies there because they really know their stuff.

Having the milk protein allergy is a serious condition, and far to often misdiagnosed. Many people think that when a certain formula is not agreeing with the child with lots of vomiting that they are allergic to the cows milk protein. My first child had the protein allergy and nearly died. He was 3 months old pooping blood, constant vomiting every bottle he took, turning blue, and unable to function at all he just layed there lifeless loosing 1 whole pound in a matter of 4 days. He was put on the neutramagen formula with not cows milk protein with no reflux meds involved and he survived with no more vomiting. My second child had reflux he was on zantac for a matter of 3 or 4 months and now i have taken him off of it because he no longer spits up and i seen no change when he did take the meds. so i believe his reflux was also misdiagnosed because children do not grow out of the relux it just may subside for a period of time, even as adults people who tend to have heartburn and reflux usually have it as a child. I really don’t think that they always go hand in hand but in some cases they may. With my first child he actually outgrew the milk protein allergy at age 2 and is no longer lactose intolerant.
I may have wrote alot of unnecessary info but that was my story lol. good luck!

My daughter has both. She’s been on Alimentum since she was 8 weeks old, and was put on Reglan shortly after. She will be 11 months on the 7th, and the doctor said we will also revisit the whole milk thing when she is one, since there are no food allergies in the family. If the problems still persist, we’ll go to a gastro-enterologist(sp?). I hope things work out with milk. I’ve never had to deal with a food allergy, and one to milk just seems overwhelming, since it’s in a lot of stuff.

My son has had reflux since day 1. He has not been tested for a milk allergy.. as you know we have thought he might have 1 but we just switched to similac sensitive rs and he broke out right after the first bottle. rash on both sides of his mouth and awful diarrhea.so im still unsure what the deal is. I also have tried soy and he had the runs as well. they often say if theres a milk allergy there is alot of the time a soy allergy as well. they say if it is just reflux they usually out grow it around 6-9 months.. how was she when she was off the meds? I just put him back on the ar. im in the process of trying to find a new ped and am just going to keep him on the ar till then I guess. if he gets bad again I might just try the ali myself..hows the prevacid working?

September 13 is my birthday!!!! anyways, my daughter had reflux but seems to do fine on milk based formula. We were on soy but she stopped taking it. Every time we give her it she would spit out the bottle and then one night she would not even et us feed her.

Yep,my three week old daughter has both. Have had to switch her formula twice already. She seems to be doing better on Similac Advanced Sensitive RS. Hopefully won’t have to change it again.
