I have a 10 1/2 month old daughter and I need some opinions on if you think this is an allergy or waht I should do. I gave her some yogurt for the first time about 1 1/2 weeks ago. 3 days later no reactions so I gave her some more. by that evening she was really gassy and fussy and got a bit of a red rash around her mouth. She normally is constipated, After the yogurt she didn’t have diarrhea, but she had regualr baby poo instead of the hard rock she normally has. Now a week later, I tried giving her a little bit more yesterday of a different kind of yogurt to see if it was something in that kind that I gave her the second tiem around or if ti really was the dairy in the yogurt. Now, she does not have a rash. She is not fussy or gassy, but now she has diarrhea. She’s already pooped 3 times today and she is a one BM a day baby.
I really do think it is possibly a milk allergy now, but I’m still so confused. In the past she has had ice cream and whipped cream both have dairy, but no reaction or diarrhea. Why now with the yogurt? I was looking forward to starting whole milk in a few months, but now I don’t feel like I can. I am going to call her doctor, but I just want some opinions. Do you think its an allergy or lactose intollerance and why has it not bothered her before?
She is on a milk based formula. It is Enfamil Gentlease. It has the broken down proteins. It is only for up to 12 months. If she does have a milk allergy, what am I supposed to give her after a year if I can’t give her milk. The only toddler formulas I can find are soy, which she can’t keep down and regular milk based without the proteins broken down.

If she had a milk allergy you would have known from the beginning because Enfamil Gentlease is milk based. My daughter had a milk allergy for her first nine years. She could not tollerate any milk ingredients or products. The symptoms she showed were rashes, hives that looked like masquito bites but were the size of half dollars, projectile vomitting, diarrhea, blood plus mucous in her stools, severe stomach aches, trouble breathing, asthma problems, coughing, wheezing, cold like symptoms, watery eyes, runny nose, coughing, itchy eyes, and more from her exposure. It is alot more than just some diarrhea which would be a symptom of lactose intollerance.
Because she could tollerate the formula which is milk based I would not believe she is allergic. What flavor was the yogurt? Plain, vanilla, fruit flavor? It sounds to me like she would most likely be allergic to another ingredient in the yogurt instead of the milk. Yogurt can naturally make BMs looser, without it being diarrhea. Maybe her system is cleansing it self with the help of the yogurt. 3x a day does not sound necessarily like diarrhea. Is it explosive out of the diaper? To me it sounds like she will be able to have whole milk without a problem in a few months. This does not sound like an allergy or she would have had the symptoms I mentioned above from the formula, whipped cream, and ice cream she had.

My daughter is allergic to milk. She gets hives if it touches her skin and she swells up if she ingests it.
But it took a few servings before the allergy presented itself.
If she’s on a milk-based formula and isn’t having a reaction, then it probably isn’t a milk allergy.

I am allergic to dairy, as are both my children. What you’re describing may not be an allergy to dairy, but instead, it may be what is IN the yogurt. Was there fruit in it? Or, sometimes the makers will put artificial ingredients in and the reaction can come from that. Or, the other possibility could be that she is just allergic to yogurt. Try giving her a different type of yogurt with no fruit. See what happens.
It’s a sad way to check for allergies, but it must be done. When my daughters were born, the doctors tried giving them everything from soy to goats milk…nothing worked. I had to buy formula that was extremely expensive…but worth it once they stopped vomiting and running through a bag of diapers a day.

This DOESN’T sound like lactose intolerance. She would be reacting to all dairy. My son was and it put him in the hospital. We had to switch to a soy formula until he outgrew it. Now he’s fine with dairy.
It sounds more like she has an allergy to a flavor or dye. Something like strawberry, pineapple, or such could have caused the rash. Anything acidic. What was the first flavor you gave her?
The second one didn’t cause a rash, but caused diarrhea…. that sounds normal. Yogurt contains cultures that can regulate you digestive system. She’s getting cleaned out. At that age, it’s probably not a good idea to give her yogurt every day.
Keep in mind that healthier foods generally cause gas. Fruit, veggies, etc. I would guess that the first yogurt was a fruit flavor. It caused either an allergic reaction to the fruit, or it irritated her skin around her mouth because of acid. It also caused her to become gassy.
Check with your doctor, but I think you’re safe with dairy. She’d be having constant severe issues if she was allergic to milk.
    God bless!

she might have a sensitive stomach or she still may be lactose intolerant because some times that targets diffirent things sorry thats not much of a help but heres an example, im lactose intolerant and thinks like ice cream dont bother me that much but milk, yogurt, and cheese bother me i dont know why not some dairy products and such but i think you should ask her doctor. there are medicines that you can give to your child that can help with being lactose intolerant.
