That does sound like an allergy and contrary to what the one poster said, he would not have grown out of it by now. Allergies usually don’t develop until around this time anyways. However, he could very well grow out of it by the time he hits adolescence. That is quite common.
The thing that makes me believe it is an allergy and not just lactose intolerance is that a rash would not develop on the skin (where the milk touched it) if it was lactose intolerance (since the reason for lactose intolerance is purely related to digestion and a lack of the lactase enzyme, and when milk touches the skin its not being digested).
If he was lactose intolerant, he wouldn’t be able to tolerate the lactose in your breast milk, and since you said he was fine with breast milk but not cows milk I think its just an allergy to casein or another cows milk protein.
It is possible to have harsher reactions to milk when it touches your skin than when you drink it. For instance, I can drink milk shakes and eat cheese and yogurt, but if plain milk gets on my skin I get a rash. The same thing also happens to my husband. Either way, he shouldn’t drink something if he is allergic to it because his allergic reactions to it could get worse over time.
All you can do is have him avoid contact with cows milk if it causes his stools to soften.
Milk allergy is not a terrible thing and there are many alternatives to cows milk, such as rice milk, soy milk, sometimes even goats milk.

Your son may have allergies to milk and IF he grows out of it, it may take several years. I have an ex-stepson that is allergic to whew, a product in milk. He was 5 when they discovered the problem. He would get a rash around his eyes and mouth, and he was still wetting the bed. His parents were killing him slowly and didn’t know it. Once they stopped giving him milk, and any product with whew in it, ALL his problems cleared up, to this day he can’t have whew without the rashes around his eyes and mouth returning. He is now in his 30′s.

Well if you think he has a milk allergy, stop feeding him milk now!! What are you waiting for his throat to close up? And you noticed this in MARCH?? Rolling eyes lol. Are you a new mother? I’m assuming a young mother at that. Allergies affect the resperatory system as well as the skin etc. I never would have let 4 months go by. Go get him tested.

there is a high chance that he is, but you should go to a docter and have this looked into, for safety, you should probably lay off the milk/milk products though, i hoope you find out soon!

I think he’s lactose intolerant. Those other people really do not know what they’re talking about, he would have grown out of it by now.
You shouldn’t give him milk though, calcium teddy bears are a good substitute! Seriously.

Does he get colic several hours after you drink milk? My son became lactose intolerant when I was nursing him, and I had to avoid dairy products also. It does sound like he has a problem with milk; allergies are seldom outgrown.

Well, it may be coincidental but he may have a rash at the same time he drinks the milk. Other than that i would say see a doctor.

Don’t you think a doctors surgery / office is a better place to ask a question like this.

Talk to your Dr. Both of my children had milk allergies and had to drink soy milk.

Sophia M does NOT know what she is talking about!! 80% of kids with milk allergies do outgrow them, but i think it’s generally by their 3rd birthday. Do not listen to her- lactose intolerance would cause gastrointestinal issues, but not the rash!
I have an infant with a milk allergy, and i had to cut all dairy out of my diet. i highly suggest doing this and seeing if you see a change in him. you might not even realize that he is reacting to the cow’s milk proteins from foods you eat until you cut them out. my son had been diagnosed with asthma and was CONSTANTLY congested until i took the dairy out of my diet, and then it cleared up completely. it’s hard, because dairy is in a lot of things, and you have to read labels for everything, but it’s possible.
i suggest checking out the yahoo group TerrificKidsWFA. it’s a group for parents of kids that have food allergies, and there are lots of moms with lots of experience- they’ve been a tremendous help to me!
