When Can I Switch Back To Milk Based Formula?
Posted by: Alan in Milk Allergies, tags: Back, Based, Formula, Milk, Switch, When
My 5 mo old son has been on a hypoallergenic (very expensive) formula since age 6 weeks due to a diagnosis of lactose intolerance and milk allergy/sensitivity. Now that he is on solids he seems to tolerate milk products well and I am attempting to change to a regular formula to save money. Has anyone else tried this? Been successful? Today he is getting half and half and seems to be doing fine. I know what to look for with the lactose intolerance, but the milk allergy diagnosis was shaky so I am not sure what to look for.

My daughter was on hypoallergenic formula due to milk and soy allergies. She started to tolerate soy at about 6 months and milk at 12 months. She would still get a little gasey when she had alot, so I did half and half.

If you’re going to try it, I would hold out as long as you can – at least 6 months when the digestive system is remarkably stronger and more tolerant. But first, I would try to have your health insurance pay for it, if you have it. I know of many mothers that get expensive formula for free for similar reasons. Good luck!

My daughter was on Alimentum from about 7 weeks until 10 months. We tried switching her back to milk based formula at 6 months and it didn’t work. She had the same symptoms as before…rashes, eczema on her face, bad gas, blood in stool.
We waited until 10 months, and she did ok. We did it quite slowly….1/4 Alimentum, 3/4 regular and so on.
I know how expensive it is! For some reason, my daughter couldn’t tolerate the powder version, and had to have the Ready to Feed…$9.00 for a 32 ounce bottle…and she drank 1 a day!!
