Is Eczema A Sign Of A Milk Allergy?
Posted by: Alan in Milk Allergies, tags: Allergy, Eczema, Milk, Sign
My son has eczema and was prescribed cream for it. It worked and made it go and it does reappear.
My son was also put on lactose free formula last week as he had caught the flu from his sister. And since he was on the LF formula i don’t remember him breaking out.
He is back on the regular formula is really fussy and has broken out twice.
He has seen the dr. about his eczema but the dr. did not ask about the formula.
Could his eczema be a result to a milk allergy or intolerance?
I nor his father does not have any food allergies on our side of the family. Thanks for your help.
And should we switch him back on the Lactose free? We are on our last can of reg. formula, so immediate help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Eczema is one symptom of milk allergy/intolerance, but it can develop for many other reasons, such as overheating/sweat, family tendency, or many sources make it sound it can just show up for really no reason at all. If you feel like his condition was worsened by the regular formula, by all means switch him back to lactose free formula. It is certainly not going to hurt him to do so. Many babies suffer from minor lactose intolerance that goes away by the time they are 1-2 years old, so it is not at all impossible that your son could have this problem, even if neither of you has food allergies.

I have eczema and my daughter has out breaks every now and again as well. I never had an out break until I was 27 years old and pregnant. I was eating 2 eggs a day and have since learned that I have an egg allergy.
I do know a woman who breaks out due to dairy but that is not the cause of mine or my daughter’s eczema. The creams can help to control the out breaks but we have opted to rid our diets of the offender; eggs.

Not necessarily. I have excema but not a milk allergy. Excema tends to run in families, though, so see if anyone else has excema.

Babies should be on lactose-free diets anyway. Even if he’s not allergic now, he could very well develop allergies if he gets too much dairy at a young age.

Ecxema can be, but is not always a sign or allergies in general, not just a milk allergy. Baby can be allergic to dust mites and dander or other foods he may be eating. Some people do get eczema and do not have allergies at all. It just varies from person to person. He may have lactose intollerence, best to check with a doctor though. If the lactose free formula keeps the eczema from coming back and he is happier when on it, then use it. I know it is more expensive, but up to you if you want to put baby on that or not. Usually doctors don’t like to do actual allergy tests on babies so all they are going to do is tell you to try to LF formula.
