after not being able to bf at three weeks old I had my baby on similac advance, made baby very unhappy. Switched her to isomil soy. She thrived. Now at 6 months old I have read the possible side effects of soy and want her off. I tried gentlease, but made her scream with gas just like with the advance..does anyone think this could be a milk allergy or intolerance? Doesn’t give her any other symptoms other than very painful gas (no rash, diarrhea, or spit up) Any ideas on formulas…doc said maybe carnation good start? Please help! How do you switch formula and how long do you see if it works? If baby screams you instantly stop or do you give it time?

If you’re going to switch formula do it slowly. You can do half and half bottles and slowly do carnation more and more. I would also recommend getting Mylicon or some other sort of gas drops and putting it in her bottles that might help.

You might try Nutramigen. It tastes terrible and cost twice as much but could be worth it’s weight in gold if it works for the baby. This sounds like an inability to digest cow’s milk protein. If the Nutramigen does not work you might go back to soy. I know you are worried about side effects but think of the baby’s little tummy and how content she was on it.

my friend has this with her baby and hers isnt actually allergic to milk but she cant digest the protein in it and she is on soy milk and Doing great. I think it would be fine or else they wouldnt allow it to be sold, But always talk to it with your doctor.

Carnation good start gives them gas (3 friends of mine tried it and all of them switched their kids off). I used Enfamil lipil for my son but from what I hear the walmart brand is better on their stomach. All formula is FDA regulated and I have checked into the ingredients and they are the exact same and I even checked with my pediatrician and he says go for it. The store brands just aren’t advertised and have the fancy wrapping.

how about trying lactose free…it’s not as drastic as soy, and then you’ll know whether she’s simply intolerant of lactose, or whether it is all milks. my son had lactose free for a temporary intolerance following a stomach bug. we changed onto lactose free immediately without combining the 2 milks, as the regular milk was upsetting him. after one month we had to get him back onto his regular formula. i did this by mixing them and it worked well. in his 8oz bottles i combined 1 scoop to 7scoops. after a few days, 2scoops to 6 scoops…etc until now he has just about switched over completely. if she is unhappy on one milk, just switch over quickly…there’s no point doing it slowly! the lactose free we used was by SMA…we had to persevere with the taste as he took a couple of days to take it properly! whatever you do don’t put her on follow on milk, as that gave my son the runs again!
